"AUSTRALIA."
[REUTER'S telegram.]
Melbourne, December 2. A memorandum has been forwarded to Sir Henry Parkes, Premier of New South Wales, by Mr. Gillies, on behalf of the Governments of Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland. In it the colonies jointly recognise the rights of New South Wales to adopt any available designation; but, as that colony proposes to take for itself the name of the entire continent, the protesting Governments desire to represent that appropriation of the name " Australia" to any individual colony is a measure which other colonies cannot consent to. The memorandum concludes by expressing a hope that, in consequence of the sister colonies having, after serious consideration, so strongly deprecated the proposed adoption of the name by New South Wales, that colony will, in deference to their sentiments, frankly and promptly abandon the attempt to interfere with the name " Australia."
