The cutter is now along tide this breastwork, near the dock, at the foot jf Albert-street, and so soon as she is free of her tallast is to be placed in the hands of the ship-* fright for complete repairs. At noon to-day the a.s, Slanapouri is to get rnder weigh in continuation of her voyage to Southern ports and Melbourne. At the hands of Mr. George Niccol, at his j*rds at Devon port, the p.s. Tongariro has during the pant few weeks been receiving a thorough overhaul. She has received new ■ponsoni, and on deck a number of serviceable alterations have been made, while her cabins fe.ave been entirely gutted and refitted and fur» dished, and with the addition of a judicious application of the paint brush the steamer has been placed in really first-class order, in fact, one would hardly know the old boat under her new facing. These alterations, which have been of an extensive nature, have been made in view of the fact that she is to be put into active service again, her owners—the Birkenhead Ferry Co.--intending to at once place her on their Terry service between Auckland and Birkenhead. That important part of the vessel, the engine room, has not been overlooked, for the machinery. boiler, etc., has been subjected to a thorough overhaul, and is now in good order again, Mid ready to do its part of the forthcoming work. The steamer, it is expected, will be brought over from Devonport to-day. All is In a state of activity at the yards of the Auckland and North' Shore Ferry Co. in vetting their second steamer put togother, and ready to assist the Eagle in her ferry service. The company are in hopes of having the vessel ready for launching in about another fortnight. The brigantine Farvel, now on her way from Newcastle to this port, brings a cargo of 501 tons coal. The trial for speed of what is described as the fastest torpedo boat afloat took place on the Thames on September 7. The new torpedo boat Kayo, built to the order of the Spanish Government by Messrs. Thomycroft, of Chiswick, made six runs over the measured milo, with the following results: —First run, againiit tide, 2'37i minutes ; second, with tide, 2'lOJ minutes third, against tide, 2 36% minutes fourth, with tide, 2"9 minutes ; fifth, against tide, 2'3l£ minutes; sixth, with tide, 2.102 minutes, giving an average run of 29£ statute miles per hour. The fastest run—the fourthwas equal to a speed of 32£ statute miles. Subsequently, a two hours' run past the Nore and to sea took place, a speed of 24*63 knots being recorded. The officers stated that this might easily have been increased to 25 knots. The acquisition of the Kayo will put the Spanish Government in possession of the two fastest torpedo boats afloat, the Ariete being nearly equal to the former in speed. The B.s. Chelmsford hence, arrived at Wha«. Icatane on Tuesday evening last, and after landing passengers and cargo she left again yesterday morning for Opotiki.
