London, October 3. A thousand unemployed sugar refiners marched in procession to Hyde Park to-day, and speeches were made condemning the system of sugar bounties.

THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION.

The Huddersfield Chamber of Commerce, after hearing Sir Graham Berry, have appointed a committee to arrange a collection of exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition.
THE AUSTRALIAN MAIL SUBSIDY. London, October 3.
The Treasury have cabled to Lore Carrington in reference to the mai subsidy, pointing out that payment by weight is impracticable; that they require a fixed proportion, and that possibly they will agree to England paying £90,000 and Australia £80,000.
AUSTRALIAN GOLDMINING.
London, October 3.
A syndicate is willing to purchase the Rockwell Silver Company, at Silverton, New South Wales, for £100,000.
The following have been appointed London directors of the Gippsland Goldmining Company:—Messrs. Archibald Arnott, Ohas. Clark, and Alex. Mcßae.
THE WAR OFFICE AND THE COLONIES. London, October 2. It is officially announced that the War Office is willing to allow general officers to inspect Australian fortresses every two years. Aft OCEANOF WHISKY. London, October 2. Four Scotch whisky firms have called meetings of their creditors. Other firms are expected to follow suit. Forty million gallons of whisky are bonded in Scotland.
THE BEETROOT CROP. London, October 2. The beetroot crop in France and Germany is smaller than usual, but the yield will be immaterially reduced owing to the larger area under cultiva tion.
