The sudden death is announced of Mr. John Carter, Registrar of Titles, Victoria. THE AUSTRALIAN MAILS. London, September 29. The Treasury have cabled to the colonies respecting the mails, and show a disposition to haggle over the matter. BUBEAR DEFEATED. London, September 29. Courtney has defeated Bubear in the sculling match. COLONIAL WINE EXHIBITS. , London, September 29. Messrs. Burgoyne and Co., wine merchants, have offered a fifty guinea prize for the best colonial wines exhibited at the Melbourne Exhibition on the same terms as for a similar prize offered at the Adelaide Exhibition. THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION. London, September 29. Sir Graham Berry is now making a tour*of the large provincial centres, with the object of promoting representation at the Melbourne Exhibition. The P. and O. steamship Massilia (from Melbourne on August 9), arrived at Plymouth this morning.
