DROWNED LIKE A RAT.

A SINGULAR ACCIDENT.

Melbourne, September 12. A sad accident happened at Greta yesterday. A young man, named Jonn Varcoe, and his sister were on their way to the Wangaratta show in a spring-cart. In trying to avoid a rut, the cart ran over a stump, completely overturning it, and pinning the occupants underneath, Varcoe being caught across the chest and his sister by the head. They remained in this position for about an hour, when they were found by a man whose name has not been ascertained, but who had only one arm. By great exertions he managed to extricate the girl, but could not help the man. He then went for assistance, and on his return found that Varcoe had fallen into a small stream which had been dammed back by his body. The water had risen and covered his head and, of coarse, drowned him.
