[own correspondent.] Thames, Saturday. Colonel Fraser announces that he will not be a candidate for tho Mayoralty next year. A rifle match between the Navals and Rangers was won by the former by 28 points. [PRESS association.] Wellington, Saturday. At the request of the Premier of Victoria, all the Australian Governments, and the Government of New Zealand, have consented to observe the 26th of January as an Australasian holiday in commemoration of the Australian centonuary. In the Compensation Court to-day, the case Tctford v. the Wellingtou-Manawatu Railway Company, claim £1000, an award was made for £112, the claimant to pay costs. Bafvell v. same company, claim £600, an award was made for £165, each side to pay its own costs.
Greymouth, Sunday. The whitebait season is fully in. Great quantities are being caught. A great many men on tho Midland Railway line are still out of work. The men are anxiously looking forward to new contracts being let. It is considered very probable that there will be some new oues shortly. The demand for timber is so great that the local mills are quite unable to supply it, and considerable quantities are being imported from Hokiiika,
