Up to the hour of going to press there were no signs of the R.M. s.s. Zealandia from San Francisco with the English and American mails. The steamer, by her contract, was due here on Thursday last, but no doubt her delay will be accounted for by her having met with heavy and adverse weather between Samoa and this port. The s.s. lona, on her arrival from her Great Barrier trip and after, landing her passengers and cargo, was yeiterday morning taken into dock for cleaning, etc. In consequence she did not leave for Mercury Bay and Tairua last evening. The s.s. Mararoa had rather a severe tussle on her trip down from Russell to this port during Thursday night, she having to contend Against a strong S.E. gale. In consequence her arrival here was delayed until close upon 9 o'clock yesterday morning. However, the Union Company, with the promptitude for which they are so noted, managed to get her away again on her trip to Southern ports and Melbourne close to her announced hour of starting, mid-day. She was not very largely favoured with either passengers or cargo. A strong easterly gale prevailed during yesterday, and in consequence, a number of vessels ready for sea had to be content with remaining fast and snug at anchor in harbour. The s.s. Whampoa, which was here recently, is to leave Wellington for Hongkong direct on the 28th inst, The cutter Spitfire arrived here yesterday morning from Tologa Bay, with a cargo consist* ing of 6 bales skins, 2 bales bones, 12 packages tallow, 28 sacks maize. The Union Co.'s s.s. Mawhera is to leave Dunedin on Tuesday next, for this port, oaiing «& rout© at the usual East Coast ports.

The brigantine Parnell left Hokianga, and the Peerless the Kaip»r», yesterday, both bound with timber for Melbourne. The ketches Lizette and Agnes Martin were both windbound at Whangarei yesterday. The s.t, Glenelg left Russell, for this port, on Thursday evening: but, owing to a very heavy | S.E. gale, which prevailed on the coast, she was foroed to return again, after getting as far as t Cape Brett. She will come on direotly the weather moderates. ... ... The N. Z. S. Co.'s s.s. Aorangi having left , Wellington for this port on Thursday afternoon » last may be expeoted to reach here during the - course of to-day. After landing the Auckland portion of her London cargo, she will return '» South again, and thence home. From here the steamer will take a quantity of kauri gum and • other cargo for the home market. , Owing to the strong easterly gale that pre- , vailed yesterday, the sailing of the s.s. Clans- , man for Tauranga, and Douglas and Chelmsford , for Opotiki, had to be postponed until the , wsather moderates. .... ' ... The b.s. Wellington left for Whangarei last ' evening. The schooner Dunedin arrived yesterday afternoon from Napier, after ft very smart run up of some forty-eight hours, and it is needless > te say that fine favouring winds aided the vessel during the passage. She dropped anchor off the > Railway Wharf. The Dunedin has come to 1 this port for the purpose of procuring ft return 1 cargo of drain pipes, timber, etc., for Napier. The schooner Waipu'came into harbour at : about 6.30 p.m. last evening, from her usual > East Coast trip, bringing as cargo 8 packages and 1 34 hides, 28 bales fungus, 655 sacks maize. She left Gisborne on the 3rd instant, and worked : along the coast, leaving Kawakawa last at 7 > p.m, on Thursday, reaching hero at stated.
