ATTACK ON AN EDITOR.
MR. LARNACH ABUSIVE. [by'teleukaph.—ow.n correspondent.] Dunedin, Wednesday. Mr, Laknach, Minister for Mines, in speaking at Anderson's Bay last night made a furious attack on the Editor of the Daily Times. No candidate who has sought a public position in Otago ever descended to use such terms as the Minister for Mines. To give an idea of what he said is impossible without becoming libellous, 'to oall tho editor a " liar" was not sufficient, as he went further, and used terms which if spoken by one person to another face to face would have inevitably subjected him to personal chastisement. The csuse of the vituperation was that the editor in commenting <>u the speeches of Messrs. Fergus and Pyke made reference to the expenditure of the Mines Department. 'The Minister, furious at this, wrote a letter, in which, following up the example of his colleague*, he violated all journalistic etiquette by personal reference to the editor. This was refused insertion unless couched in respectful language, whereupon the Minister advertised his letter in the evening paper, and then proceeded to relieve his feelings at his meeting. Though some of those present appeered to regard the abuse as something very funny, the more respectable portion of the public hissed him very heartily. Out of 60 persons, 10 voted for a vote of no confidence in the Government, and only '23 for confidence in Mr. Lsrnach. There is intense indignation over the gross personal attack by the Minister, and more will probably be heard of it.
