WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS

(from our OWN correspondents.) . Hamilton, Wednesday. Monday next being one of the Jubilee holidays the ordinary meeting of the Domain Board and the adjourned meeting of the Borough Council will he held on Friday evening, the 17th in6t. The balance of the accoutrements and arms for the Volunteer Kifle Company arrived yesterday; and as Captain Reed received a telegram on the Gth inst. to say that the uniforms were to leave Dunedin the next day, it may be expected that the corps will make a soldierly appearance on parade next week. Inspector Campbell was exceedingly pleased with the proficiency in their drill shown at Monday evening's inspection, and again last night, when not a member was absent from the ranks, and pronounces the corps one of the finest and best drilled he has seen in the colony. Mr. J. B. Whyte, M.H.R. for Waikato, is laid up with an attack of his old enemy rheumatic gout in the knee. People here are beginning to ask when a move is to be made in the crectiou of the new public buildings, and blame the Borough Council for the inaction. The matter rests now entirely with the l'ublic Works Department, and as it has been determined to let the earthworks, which will cost a consider, able sum, as a separate contract to the buildings themselves, the Mayor telegraphed yes* terday to Mr. Blackett, at ellington, suggesting that as there were many men in this district out of work, the present would be an excellent time for getting the work done reasonably cheap, and at the same time benefit the district by affording employment during the dullest months in the season. A serious accident happened to a little boy named Porter, who with others was playing on the large bridge on the East Hamilton Station road. He slipped and fell feet outwards between the planking and the lower rail, but was fortunately caught by the chin on the upper edge of the lower side batten, and hung suspended over a drop of nearly 50 feet long enough for Mr. George Mason, who happened to be within a short distance, to run forward and drag him up on to the bridge again. This bridge is within a stone's throw of the public school, and a narrow batten along the rails between the present lowest batten and the decking would prevent the possibility of the recurrence of such an accident in the future. Noakuawahia, Wednesday. The business people here and settlers of the district are anything but satisfied with the arrangement by which the brauoh of the New Zealand Bauk is kept open here two days a week, and the Colonial Bank has been invited to start business here, and will probably do so. OnAUt'O, Wednesday. The house of Mr. William Hunter, senr., had a narrow escape from being destroyed by fire, a spark from one of the chimneys having got into the roof and done some little damage before assistance arrived and the fire was got under. The house is insured in the Victoria, the agent of which company has been here to ascertain the damage. The house will be re-roofed with corrugated iron.

[BY TELEGRAPH.-OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Hamilton, Wednesday evening. Mr. J. C. Booth was returned unopposed to-day for the vacant seat in the Hamilton Highway Board. Kihieihi, Wednesday evening.

' At the meeting of the Library Committee —present: Messrs. King (chairman), Anderson, Ogle, Bovne, and Rigg—the balance in hand (£9 Is *10d), was handed over to the secretary of the late committee. As there were only IS members on the list, it was resolved that 3 canvass of the townspeople be mads to increase the number. Te Awamuto, Wednesday.

There were a number of police and civil cases heard at the courthouse to-day, by Mr. H. W. Sonhcroft, R.M. The first was under the Public Works Act, by Constable Ryan, against James Clayton, for riaiug on the footpath on May 10th, for which he was fined 10s and costs. John Dunscombe was then charged by Constable Berriman with three offences under the Licensing Act, for selling liquor at Otorohanga oil the 17th and lSth of May, to Walter Lee and Thomas Petty, without being duly licensed. The liquor supplied was whisky, not " hop beer."- The case against John Bayliss and his son John, for rescuing a horse, from the poundkeeper at Alexandra, was dismissed. Jesse Sage v. A. K. Barton, for £21 16s for board and lodgings ; judgment for the plaintiff for the amount, and £5 7s costs. Jesse Sage v. John Baylisa, oen.: For possession of a house at Alexandra. Ordered to give up possession and pay costs. Matthias Asmusa v. Wm. Olliver : For possession of a house at Alexandra. Ordered to vacate by the 241h instant, and pay £2 123 cotts.
