From Russell : 6 tuna whale oil, 23 sacks gum, 4 cases gum, 5 packages sundries. The Union Co.'a s.s. Te Anau came into harbour yesterday afternoon from Southern ports with passengers and cargo. Since last bore the To Anau has been hid up at Dunedin for the past five or six weeks, and during that period she haa been painted from stem to stern, and her saloon and cabins redecorated, and nothing has been left undone to secure the comfort of those who travel in this popular boat, which still holds her position with the travelling public as one of the most comfortable boats in the company's service. Captain J. Mcintosh 18 still in command, and to that gentleman we are indebted tor the following report of the steamer's passage : Jailed from Dunedin, where Bho haß been undergoing a five weeks' overhaul, on. the 9th inst. at 6 p.m., after transhipping passengers and cargo from the s.s. Waihora, from Melbourne; arrived at Lyttelton on the 10th at 9 a.m., Wellington on the 11th at noon, Napier on the 13th at 8 a.m., and Giaborne on the 14th at 6 a.m. ; left Gisborne same day at 11 a.m-, and rounded East Cape at 7 p.m. ; passed Cuvier Island at 9.30 a.m., and arrived alongside as above. Throughout the entire passage the weather proved unfavourable, heavy rains and dense fogs, with head wind and sea, persistently delayed progress. The Union Co,'a R.M s.s. Arawata arrived from Fiji, via Russell, yesterday morning early, ■with mails, passengers, and cargo. Captain Cromarty reports that the Arawata left Levuka at 12.30 a.m. on the 9th instant, arriving in Suva at 5.45 a.m. Took on board cargo, mails, and passengers, and left at 5.25 p.m.; passed Mount Washington at 11.30 p.m., sighted Cape Brett at 6.40 a.m. on the 14th, and arrived at Russell at 8.50 a.m.; coaled bunkers at Opua, and left at 4.45 p.m.: passed Tiritiri at 5.20 a.m., on the 15th, and arrived alongside wharf at 7 a.m. Experienced fresh southerly winds till 14th, thence fine weather to arrival. Whilst on the voyage from Lyttelton to London, the master (E. H. Holbeche) of the N.Z. 8. Co.'s ship Wairoa died of rheumatic fever. The s.s. Australia took her departure for East Coast ports and Wellington yesterday evening. Amongst her cargo was 240 cases •kauri gum for transhipment to the N.Z.S. Co.'a Rimutaka, for London. She also took, for various coast ports, a quantity of sugar taken on board at the N.Z. Supjar Co.'a Works at Birkenhead. An additional 700 cases kauri gum is to be sent on by the Ur.fcomahana to»day for the Rimutaka, The ship Centurion has broken hulk, and so far iB putting out her cargo in capital order. From hero the ship is to go to Iquique, Peru, there to load for a home port. The schooner Louie started on her voyage to Rarttonga yesterday morning. On Saturday evening Meat the s.s. Chelmsford is to make a Jubil&B excursion to White Island, and on Tuesday will return again in time to permit of her. p-issengerß witnessing the illuminations an thut evening. The trip should prove a most enjoy able one. The Te Anau. brought up amongst other cargo, the Auckland portion of the Coptic's cargo from London. This afternoon she ia to j proceed on to Sydney. To Mr. J. Ness Keith, who fills the position of purser, we are indebted j for the prompt dolivery of our files, etc. The lonian and International line have (says the Shipping World) concluded a contract for the construction of a steamer with Messrs, Laird Brothers, of Birkenhead. The steamer, which Is to be c.[ steel, will register 8500 tons. She ■will be fitted up in the most luxurious fashion, with all the most recent improvements for the comfort of ail clnssts of passengers. The new ( steamer will be fitted with twin-screw engines, V bo that, in the case of one breaking down she can be worked with the other. She will also V Lave a specie 'i arrangement of watertight longitudinal and transverse bulkheads, so as to make her practi tally unsinkible. She will be built to take her place as an armed cruiser, having all ' the Adrairalty requirements. It is confidently jxpcct'id that she will be ready to be placed on tho berth in time for next year's passenger traffic. On account of some of the earliest constructed dooks of Liverpool not having sufficient water over the sill for the present large steamers and ships, and as the cost of deepening the docks is beyond practical consideration, it is proposed to erect powerful pumping machinery, by means of which the level of water in the docks onn be raised. This scheme will affect the Brunswiok, Wapplng, Queen's, King's, and CJoburg docks, and is estimated to cost £50,000-
