THE TREATMENT OF ORES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sik,—Your leader upon our gold6elds is extremely interesting, and the report of the sale of the Waihi stone will go far to prove that our auriferous country is still capable of yielding immense wealth under proper treatment. Aβ it appears the stone was sold to a continental house, it would probably interost many to know that at Reichenstein, in Silesia, a system is in use for the treatment of poor minerals, and metallurgical refuse. This method was severely tested by M.M. Plattner, Richter, Duflos, and other scientists, and was found to answer exceedingly well with very poor ores ; ores so poor, indeed, that in New Zealand they would be cast aside and disregarded, I should think it more than possible that the Roiohenstein system (a combination of chemical and mechanical processes) is the treatment to which the Waihi stone would be subjeoted, enabling the purchasers to give so very considerable a price for it.—l am, &c, Walter W. Crawford. P. O. Box 475, Auckland, April, 1887.
