COMMERCIAL.

Nxw Zealand Herald Oflice, Thursday eveniee. The Customs duties to-day amounted to £192 lis 6d. Trade continues generally very dull, and, we understand, in some branches, this is hardly expressive enough to convey a seuse of the shrinkage in retail takings. This naturally has its corresponding effect on wholesale business. In such a market as Auckland, there it, of course, constant buying and selling going on, and even in quiet times the aggregate of a. week's transactions, if it were possible to get at it, would doubtless astonish ourselves. Still, Che tone just now is not over good, and a spirit of cautiousness is running through the mercantile community. The most interesting item for merchants and grocers is the advance in No.'2 sugar already Announced. The Sugar Company have most liberally dealt with their clients in this respect, for it has been abundantly clear that an advance here would have to follow the rise in Australia and Java, yet they have enabled immediate supplies to be well laid in at old rates; «nd in putting up the price of No. 2 only 10s per ton they have again exhibited their moderation. Cable advice of a further advance of 10s per ton by the Victoria Sugar Company has been received from Melbourne. We hear of sales of Japan rice at slightly easier rates. The market is now rather heavily stocked. The Canopus, from London, brings a first parcel of Japan rice, dressed, we presume, in Europe. It appears a roundabout way of gettiug this article, but the extraordinary low rates of sailing freights now-a days makes strange developments. We observe the vessel also brought 75 pianos. This Is a singular comnentaiy upon "depression." If these instruments can be placed within any reasonable time, we shall be inclined to think all the talk about bad times unmitigated humbug. Cable advices have been received that tho well-known Virginian tobacco factory, known as Tennent aud Co.'s, makers of the " Derby," baa been burnt down. This fact will doubtless have its influence on the price of this make of tobacco. Sago has been very scarce, but a small supply to keep the market going arrived on Monday. Inquiry for ling, salt salmon, herilngs, etc., ' it plentiful, and nuppiiet short. A little more activity in the brick building : trai e is noticeable. A sale of 1500 casks German cement is reported. In the metal trade the country demand has been muoh assisted by the work going on at the Kaihu Vulley railway, on which tbere are sixteen bridges to be built. The tenders for same have all been let separately. A fairly good demand is reported in all general lines. The importation of galvanised corrugated iron is lessening, the iron coming out in plain sheets, the galvanising and corrugating being done locally, and a saving of £2 per ton in duty thereby saved. A. movement it on foot to alter the building regulations, so that shingle roofing will not be permitted. This is a wise precaution, which should have been in force long ago. Mnize is worth 3s 91; oats, 2s 3d : milling wheat, 3s 9d; fowl wheat, 3s 6d; potatoes, £4 10*. . la the local produce market the price of butter remains the same as last week. Loud complaints are made on all hands about the quality and condition of the bulk of that furnished by local producers. It is stated that that which is obtained from the Taranaki district is far superior to the bulk of Auckland make. The Taranaki butter is said to be better bandied, and to possess a richer fhvour, the latter, perhaps, due to better pasturage for the cattle, borne quote at 81 and others at lOd per lb wholesale, while retail prices are 2d in advance on wholesale rates. Eggs have advanced to Is 6d per dozen wholesale, and Is 9d retail. kauri GUM MARKET.
