BOARD OF EDUCATION
The regular meeting of the Board of Educa-* tion was held in. the offices, Victoria Arcade, yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs. S. Luke (chairman), J. W. Carr, J. H. Upton, W. P. Moat, M.H.R., and R. Udy.
Bd• street Playground.— Seventeen tenders were received for improvements to the JBeresford-street playground, and Messrs, Colston and McShiflerty's, £195, beiag the lowest, was accepted.
Balances. —The Glance to credit of education fund was i'GOOS 4s Id ; building fund debit. £2110 15s Sd ; credit balances, £3597 Ss 5d ; Girlsl High School, credit, £136 i 3 lid.
Chairman's Report. — The report of tfcs Chairman as to temporary arrangements was read. It stated that tenders had been Invited for the erection of a teacher's dwelling at Raeo. The collector of rates at Cambridge had been referred to exemption of school sites, by virtue of section 104 of the Act. Tho Mangonui Committee hid been furnished with copies of communications from the local Board of Health as to closing of school on account of epidemic. Applications had been made to the Mercer Committee for the reservation of the endowments suggested. Resignations had been received from Miss Jessie Weston, assistant, Newton West and Mr. C. S. Cockbnrn, probationer, Newton East. Copies of the programme of annual competition of the Society of Arts had been forwarded to the headteacher of each school. .Tee report was adopted.
Election of Members The nomination of members to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of Messrs. Mi at, Cooper, and Udy, \wre received as follows Messrs. W, P. Moat, Theo. Cooper, R. Udy, and Edward Withy.
School Bondings.—The report of the committee upon appropriation for scboo» buildings wan read, it showed a balance of grant unexpended of £G69 7s, less estimate of cost of building authorised at £200—£469 7s. In view of the balance in hand on education fund account, the committee suggested that, further engagement' may be safely entered upon, in anticipation of next year's grant for buildings. 'be committee, therefore, recommended the Pf e " paration of plans and calling far tenders for teachers' dwellings at Ararimu, D ome Valley, Epsom, Tamahero, and that * teacher's dwelling be erected at Paparata of the first funds avail able„ The report wai adopted. Auckland Cits'.—r/acussion took pi* o ® in regard to an offer ov £25 per annum for* allotment in Howe-s'/weet.
