DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT TAHERE.
[BY TELZGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENTS. 1 Rotokda, Friday. TnETabeke Hotel wag burned to the ground last night between the hours of ten and eleven. So dry was the material, and so fierce the fire, that the whole work of devastation was completed within half an hour. Many valuable Maori relics and curios were destroyed, and in fact nothing was saved as far as I can find out. The telephone wires connected with the hotel and this station are fused, and this precludes the possibility of gaining further information from that source. The building is, I am given to understand, insured in the New Zealand office, but fur what amount is at present unknown. This hotel, the property of Mr. J. L. Fraser, was prettily situated on the shores of Lake Rotoiti, and was a favourite house of call on the Tauranga-Te Puke line of road. The estimated loss over and above the insurance is about £450.
Mr. George Fraser has just arrived with telephone instruments, which his brother saved at the risk of his life. Ho says the fire has made a clean sweep of everything store, houses, and all.
