CORRESPONDENCE.

THE MOUNT EDEN RIFLE RANGE. TO THE EDITOR, Sir,—Will you allow me, in reply to one of your correspondents, to repeat that the firing at the Mount Kden range is felt to bo a very serious nuisance by a large number of dwellers in the neighbourhood. Of course il; is felt far more by those whose avocation! keep them at home, than by a man of busi> ness, who is away all day. Secondly, thu position chosen for the range is one that,, according to known principles of the diffusion of sound, is perhaps the best adapted' of any in the neighbourhood of Auckland for spreading the nuisance widely. Thirdly, the nuisance, in its present form, did noG exist when most of us came to Mount Eden. There are more targets, more people practising, and, I believe, a more noisy kind of ammunition. The nuisance has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished. Finally, it is absurd to suppose that a nuisance, be it vitriol factory or rifle range, established' in a solitude, can possess an inherent right to remain as population spreads. It is absurd that that suburb of Auckland, which the doctors specially recommend for invalids, should be reuderod uninhabitable for all such, merely that ft number of active young men may be spared" a little inconvenience in the pursuit of priza _ and glory.—l am, &c., W. Steadmah Alois.
