EDEN TERRACE WATERWORKS.
A foblic meeting was held last night at the Eden Hall, Mount Eden Road, to take into consideration the expedionoy of having another poll of the ratepayers re loan of £2500 for water supply to the Eden Terrace district. There was a largo attendance. Mr, Adam Porter was voted to the chair. Ho said that at the last poll in December only 112 people voted, 19 against, and the reatfor it; but the law required a larger number. There was very great difference of opinion in the district about raising a loan of £2500. Some said water was melees without drain* age ; others doubted whether £2500 would adequately supply the district with water. The total cost of pipes would be £1473, which with 125 hydrants at £1 each amounted to about £1600. There were other expenses. A turncock would be necessary, and connecting the maius to the houseo would coat something, but £2500 would cuVer all. The cost of the water would be about 13d per 1000 gallons. If they had a good water supply' the cost would be saved by reduction in insurance rates. Mr. Cleveland suggested that the best thiug they oould do would be to ascertain if it would not be advisable to join the city at once. There was no prohibition against Eden Terrace doing so. The oity tire brigade would then be at their servioe, the rateu would not be muoh larger than they were now, and the work would be done in a more systematic manner. The Chairman said it was not advisable to join the city, as their rates would then be considerably higher. A number of othor speakers opposed joining the oity, as it had a large debt. After a rather warm discussion, Mr. McHowart proposed the following resolution, which was seconded, *' That the Board be authorised to take a poll of the electors for a water supply, and that this meeting pledge themselves to obtain a suoaestiul poll if possible." An amendment was proposed and seconded—"That this meeting ia of opinion that the time has arrived for joining the city/ . The amendment was put and lost, and the former resolution waa carried amid considerable oproar, The meeting then terminated.
