MEETING. , The following is a detailed report of the two races in which the Auokland - owned colt Escutcheon played a prominent part on New Year's Day :— The Normanby Stakes of lOsov each, with 400 added; for two-years old; second, 50aov ; and third, 25sov. When the flag went down the field was in splendid line, and, with the exception of Bedouin, all moved simultaneously. The latter was half a length behind in getting away. Liedertafel and Perhaps led the others for fifty yards, and were followed by Hortense, Escutcheon, Lord Allen, and Bedouin. At the tan crossing Perhaps had a length advantage of Liedertafel. Next to the pair was the favourite, and Escutcheon, who had been about the centre, dropped back to the rear position. Before they reached the course proper Perhaps and Hortense were together, with Loyalist next, and then oame Escutoheon, who had worked up on the outside, Bedouin, and Liedertafel. At the distance the favourite was a clear length in advance, with Bedouin and Perhaps in company, and Lord Allen and Loyalist dropped back last. Inside the distance the order was Hortense, Perhaps, Lord Alien, Bedouin, Escutcheon, and Loyalist. Lord Allen made a rush, but immediately afterwards died away. Escutcheon moved up, and Bedouin set to work to cut down the leader, but she oame away, and won in a canter by a length and a-half. Escutcheon was second, and Bedouin third, half a-length away. Then came Lord Allen, who passed Perhaps on the post. Liedertafel and Loyalist Inst. Time, lmin 4Jseo. The Criterion Stakes of ssov each, with 150 added. For two-year olds. Threequarters of a mile. The colours of Pingara and Epiourean were the most prominent when the flag went down, Citadel on the rails next, and St. Michael and Loyalist last. Crossing the tan the two firstnamed and the favourite were in close company, Ormonde and Albert Loddon together, and the others within a length of each other. Inside the course proper Escutcheon had a half length advantage of Epicurean. Pingara was a similar distance behind Epicurean. Then came Albert Loddon, St. Michael, Ormonde, and Loyalist, three lengths astern of everything, last. At the distance the favourite came away and had the field beaten at the lawn. Coming on, the fine son of Musket won as he liked by four lengths. Pingara beat Epicurean by naif a length, and then came Albert Loddon, St. Michael, Citadel, Ormonde, and Loyalist, Time, lmin 204 tec. — WAIPA RACING CLUB.
