FRANCE AND EGYPT.
A BELLICOSE SPEECH. 4< [uecter's tklegrams.] Cairo, January 1. Count Daunay, the French diplomatic agent, at a reception to-day, stated that France would not allow her interests in Egypt to be endangered, and had decided to take measures accordingly. • The Journal dee Debats, commenting on the Egyptian question, remarks —" We are far from rejecting the idea of negotiating with England, we would, on the contrary, welcome the idea with sincere satisfaction, with the hope of finally avertingagravesubjeot of suspicions, reoriminations, and quarrels. All that it will be possible to grant in order to satisfy the interests of England without betraying our own, to satisfy her amour propre without the loss of our owndignity.togiveher the certitude that we do not dream of taking in Egypt the place which she vacates, our diplomatists will be* justified in granting. But what we ask is that no negotiation should be initiated unless the possibility of arriving at a definite result can be distinctly set forth."
