As showing the success attending the teaching orders of the Roman Catholic Church in the colonies it is stated that at the University examinations held in Sydney recently pupils from 128 different schools and colleges in the colonies of New South Wales and Queensland were represented. Only 19 of these institutions were Catholic, nevertheless the number of successful Catholic candidates was a fifth of the whole in the junior examinations and nearly a third in the senior. The Marist Brothers' pupils were well to the front, 13 of them having passed the senior and 31 the junior. This was the largest number of passes in the senior examination obtained by any educational institution in the two colonies. When it is remembered that the Catholic schools are selfsupporting, receiving no Government subsidy whatever, this result must be considered highly oreditable to the Catholic body. The children attending the Epßom Public Sohool celebrated the event of the school breaking up for the holidays, on Monday last by a picnic and sports, held in the beautiful grounds of Mr. R. Udy, of Eden Grove. Some weeks ago it was decided by the committee, at the suggestion of Mr. Mcintosh, the head-teaoher, to give the ohildren a treat, and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. F, Walker, J. Craig, and Mcintosh, was appointed to inaugurate a plan for raising funds and to carry out the details, and their success was manifested in the results. About 85 ohildren were present, accompanied by many of their friends. About 20 prizes were keenly competed for, but an excellent feeling existed among the various competitors. Mrs. Udy proaided the company with a bountiful supply of excellent tea, and Mr. Cnllen sent a case of oranges, which were highly appreciated by the juveniles. . Mr. J. W. Carr, member of the Board of Education, was present, and he kindly handed out the prizes, accompanying each prize with a few well chosen words. Mr. Mcintosh was indefatigable in contributing to the enjoyment of all present. About half-past six p.m. the children assembled and gave ringing cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Udy, Mr. C»rr, Mr. Molntoah, Miss Thompson (pupil teaoher), and the subcommittee.
