Hauroto came into harbour yesterday from Southern ports with cargo and passengers. The Hauroto comes in the room of the s.s. Tarawera, which vessel is laid up at Dunedin preparing for the Union Company's annual excursion to the West Coast Sounds. The Melbourne passengers and cargo were received from the Tarawera at Dunedin by the Hauroto, and the latter vessel left Dunedin on the 15th at 4 m-, called at Lyttelton. reached Wellington at 8 a.m. on the 17th. Moved northward again at 5.30 p.m. and arrived off Napier at 9.15 on the 18th. Left at 8 p.m., called at Gisborne, where she made a short stay, and left again for Auckland, where she arrived as above. 3he experienced fine weather up the coast, with light southerly and variable winds. The Hauroto is to proceed on to Sydney this evening. The flogs of the Devonport Ferry Company's steamers were at half-mast yesterday as a token of respect to the memory of Mr. W. Smith, one of the oldest engineers of the company, who died after a brief illness on Saturday night last. The New Zealand Shipping Company have decided that Auckland bound steamers shall stop at Lyttelton Heads to land Canterbury passengers. A Wellington telegram says :—The owners of the steamer Tui have abandoned her. When everything was ready to tow her off, a southerly swell came on, when some of the chains supporting her parted, and the remainder had to be cut to save the punts. The schooner Reward, from Whangaroa, ar* rived yesterday morning with 31,500 feet timber. The schooner Jessie Niccol entered outwards at the Customs yesterday. The vessel, under charter to Messrs. Coupland and Co., is to go hence to Levuka under the charge of Captain Short. The s.B. Chelmsford left last evening for Opotiki with passengers and cargo. The a,B. lona, for Mercury Bay and Tairua, and the Clansman, for Russell and Northern ports, both took their departure last evening with cargo and passengers.^ The schooner Olive (under charter) took her departure for Norfolk Island yesterday afternoon well filled with cargo and passengers. The following vessels reported at the Customs yesterday: brigantine Oamaru, and Gael, schooner. They were both berthed at the wharf, and started landing their cargo during the day. * ... The barque Mary A. Greenwood having completed her loading of kauri gum for New York, was 'taken off to a berth in the stream •yesterday morning, and during the afternoon she cleared outwards at the Customs with a cargo valued at £27,257 (as per exports). The barque is to sail for Nevr York this morning. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co.'s s.s. lonic, from London, via Cape Town and Hobart, may be expected to put in an appearance during the course of to-day. The lonic on arrival is to be berthed at the Railway Wharf, where she will, after landing her inward cargo, take in a part cargo of frozen meat for the London market. The lonic is expected to get away hence to Southern ports on Friday morning next. Cap. tain Babot, the ship's husband of this company, came up from Wellington yesterday by the Hauroto for the purpose of superintending the loading of the frozen meat. The landing and loading of the cargo of the vessel has been entrusted to Captain John McKenzie#
