TAMPERING WITH TELEGRAMS
INFORMATION FOR BETTING PURPOSES. At the Marlborough-streeb Police Court, on November 3, Myer Myers, of Petherton Koad, Canonbury, a publisher, was charged by the Exchange Telegraph Company, under the Telegraphs Acts, with attempting to obstruct the delivery of a telegraph message, and inciting the manager and a clerk to defraud the public. Mr. Gregory, manager of tiie braucn office of the Exohange Telegraph Company, (]■!, Haymarket, stated that the prisoner called on him and told him that there was a lot of money to be made out of the tape, and endeavoured to persuade him to keep back the runners in a race till he got the result, and then send the 'runners with a private mark to indicate the winner, so that prisoner might have time to back the winner ot his club before the result came on. He also made overtures to the clerk. Mr. Newton, for the defence, submitted that his client had not In any way prevented or attempted to prevent the sending of telegrams, which was the offence indicated by the section under which he was charged. Tne magistrate observed that if the truth had been told Myers had behaved very improperly. He should very much prefer that the prisonor should be tried, and he would for that purpose grant a case, if it were applied for. The only question was whether tho offence came within the meaning of the section. Perhaps the better plan would be to remand the prisoner for a week, by which time the counsel for the prosecution would probably be able to decide how to act. Hβ would accpt bail in two sureties of £100 eaoh.
