TO WELLINGTON VIA TARANAKL
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—With reference to your, subheader of this morning re Wellington Service via Taranaki we have hitherto refrained front communicating to the public through the Press the position we have taken np in the matter. As t'a» Government are, however, treating the matter ae if the tenders eent la were of each an exorbitant character as to frustrate the service, I think it right to inform you that the tender of our company was baaed on the lowest possible estimate ot profit to the company, taking into consideration our past experience of the trade of that part of the coast. Aβ a proof that we are most anxious to assist in every way possible to open up this servict, I may etats that Wβ are perfectly willing to work the service for the Government for one year provided they guarantee U3 against loss, and if anything farther should be required ui u« Wβ shall be glad to know what it ia. With a rteamer oonneoting with the through train at New Plymouth, I think the servioe could be performed In 27 hours.—l am, ftp., Alex., McGregob, Managing Director. N.S. Co (Limited), Auckland, December 17,1886.
