THE GOLDFIELDS.

[from our ows correspondent k l Thamzs, Monday. Caledonian.— At No. 3 level Rickard's leader has been driven on abont 20 feet westward, that is, towards the Golden Crown, and 15 feet eaetward. Westward only the footwall is being followed at present, and it in about 18 inches wide. Eastward the lode divides into three or four branches in the drive, but is together in the leading stope. On Friday four pounds of picked stone were obtained in the drive, and gold is seen freely in the stopes. Larnach leader : This lode averages about a foot in width, and two gtopes have been carried home, the length being thirty feet. A little sold is seen. The crushing is shaping satisfactorily. About 50 loads are on hand. Albfrnia.—Considerable improvement is manifest in this mine. I mentioned in my laet notice that the lode when broken down from Gribble'e winze, some 25 feet, did not look bo well in the drive. A leading etope ie coming along over this point from the opposite direction, and discloses the fact that the main branch waa not seen in the drive, being still in the hangingwall. It is about sir inches in the etopes, carries excellent minerals, and shows gold very freely. New Fearnaught.— The drive has been cleared out for 330 feet, and rails laid. A cross-cut has been started, and the country is favourable for gold and progress. It is proceeding almost northward. The Fearnaught reef should be to hand in 60 feet or 70 feet; but before it is reached tome goldbearing stringers ought to be cut. At about 200 feet the Waterfall lode should be interbected. Both these reefs yielded handsome teturns in the early days. Bright Smilk. —The tributers have picked up the leader on the northern side of the break, it having been " heaved , ' about 20 feet. About 6 or 7 feet have been broken down, and dabs of gold show freely. Auckland. —The following telegram was received yesterday from the mine m&nager of the above claim:—" Thirty-five lbs picked stone." New Prince Imperial.— The manager reports, under date November 6, as follows : —There has been no gold seen yet in the eastern drive on No. 1 reef, at No. 3 level, but the quartz continues to look very promising, containing some good bright mineral, which is always a good indication with Uβ. About 10 inches of the footwall of the reef is being saved for crushing, and I purpose taking a leading etope along here in order to have a trial crushing before the end of the month. The four men employed in the underhand stope from the winze are breaking out a fair amount of good-looking quartz, which shows gold pretty freely, and which I think will prove payable. The.following tributers have crushed during the past week for the accompanying returns, viz.:—Burch, 7 loads and 401b specimens, for 64ozs 17dwts; Dudley, 12 loads and 601b, for 48oz 3dwts ; and Hennessy, 2 loads, for lOdwta gold. New Find (Waiorongomai).—Under date November 3. the manager reports :—During fortnight the low level crosscut has been extended a further distance of 15 feet. The country lately has been very tight for driving. Stoping is being carried on in mine much as last reported. The No. 1 reef in etopes south above low level continues to yield fair crushing dirt, a fair amount of gold showing through quartz from here. The No. 1 reef in riee south above Arizona level continues to show a little gold in breaking, the quartz looking kindly for gold. Stoping on footwall portion of No. 1 reef above low level has been in progress during the fortnight, the quartz coming to hand from here being very fair grade dirt. A good quantity of crushing dirt is being obtained from No. 3 reef on surface level, from where trial crushing was obtained as reported; the quartz from here has a very kindly appearanoe. Crushing is proceeding at battery as last reported, the dirt looking rather poor lately, but now showing a slight improvement. 1 will wire yon final return for month when to band. 181 TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Paeroa, Monday. Sutro (Karangahake). — The manager broke through the winze from the upper workings this morning. Diokey it now carting the quartz to the new reduction works, which will make a bona fide start on Wednesday. Several new claims have been taken up. Donedin, Monday. Fhcenix.—Crushing at Skippers—l3ooz for the month's crushing.
