The racing carnival of the Auckland Eaoing Club was opened on Saturday under ■exceptionally favourable circumstances. That \ day was bright and sunshiny, and the aspect .of nature bright and picturesque in the extreme, the beautiful emerald green of the | < meadows and docks was delightfully ; fresh, and the darker verdure of the pines ; and trees surrounding the many villas and houses on the surroundings bills served as a frame to the enclosed picture of a scene which early In the afternoon became a highly animated one. The attendance on the course was not so large as many expected, there being only from 1600 to 2000 people present during the day, but those who were present enjoyed a most pleasant afternoon's sport, the racing ' beingthroughontexcellentandexciting. There was not the slightest hitch from first to last. The various officers performing their duties In the most business-like and satisfactory manner, the "result being that although there was a heavy programme of seven races to get through, all was over in good time, and the visitors were enabled to avail themselves of the return by the special train to town. A string band, under Bandmaster lmpey, performed a number of excellent selections. This band has recently been considerably strengthened by taking in a number of well.trained musicians, and the result is that their presence on the lawn on Saturday was doubly attractive. They played the following selections during the afternoon :— Quickstep, " The Comet," J. Smith; overture, "Le Chevalier Du Guet," E. Reyloff; valse, "Summer Nights," C. H. Stone; selection, " Falka," Cbassaigne; quadrille, "Les Volligearsde la 32eme," Planquette; aohottische, " Jungfrauen," J. Heoker; valse, "Edelweiss," Saxon Verne; overture, "Lodoiska." Kreutzer; selection, •♦Seaside Echoes," Hare; march, "Tonkonoise," De Wsnzel; valse, "Longing Hearts,"Ottoßoeder ; selection, "Patience," Sir A. Sullivan; galop, "Manteaux Noirs," Buccalosi; God save the Queen. A squad of police, under Sergeant Pratt rendered all the assistance required in preserving order and keeping the course clear, but it was satisfactory to notice that the active interference of the constables was little required, for the crowd maintained excellent order, and although the booths seemed to be well patronised there was an entire absence of intoxication. Since the exclusion of the gambling element, and the gaming tables from the racecourse the duties of the police have been considerably lightened, and the club have good reason to congratulate themselves on the action they took in this matter. Mr. T. McEwin pro* vided an excellent luncheon in the large diningroom under the grandstand. The new grandstand, whioh was partly covered in, was fairly patronised, and so also was the Derby stand. As to the racing itself, it was, as already etated, exciting and interesting. , There was little or tto betting with the bookmakers in the paddock, but the totalisator was well patronised. For the first event—the Trial takes—Neoklaoe, from her previous performances, was the favourite, but she was not able to get nearer than fourth at the finish, the winner turning up in Cinderella, that consistent daughter of Javelin, and her "victory seemed to be very popular. The "Welcome Stakes was the most interesting feature of the meeting. Eleven youngsters, representing the most fashionable breeding in the colony, faced the starter. The defunct Musket had five representatives to do battle for his memory ; Anteros had three, Leolinus one, and Feve two, and • very fine lot of youngsters they seemed to be, for they were well advanced, and so docile that they gave the starter much less trouble than was expected. The winner turned up in the favourite, Bangle, own sister to Necklace, and the second was a half brother to Trenton, being ,by Musket-Frailty. The hurdle race was a really splendid performance for all the eleven horses starting, and the winner proved to be another victory for the Musket blood in Messrs. Duder's fine mare, The Belle, which won in a thoroughly game manner after a most exciting struggle, Coral defeating the favourite, Guy Fawkes, for second plaoe. The Prince of* Wales Handicap brought out a full field of eleven, the pen not being drawn through the name of any of the acceptors, and it resulted in another victory for Mr. Chaafe's stables, Turquoise who stripped in such form as to do the highest credit to his trainer appropriating the raoe. The Selling Steeple* chase only brought oat a field of four

land was won by Mr. Leonard's Falcon whioh was steered by J. Rae, who had previously ridden Belle to victory in the Hurdle Race. For the Epsom Plate nine started, and it was cleverly won by Mr. Robertson's two-year-old filly Lady Alice, who beat off Catesby at the finish. For the Selling race, the last race on the programme, there were five starters, and Messrs. Lyons and Blaikie's mare Pipi won with comparative ease. The following are the details of the several races :— Trial Stakes of lOOsovs, with a sweepstakes of 3«ova each to go to second horse. Weight-for-age; for three-year-olds and upwards. Maidens, if three-year-olds, allowed 51b; four-year-olds, 71b; five years and upwards, 101b. One mile. Mr. D. Twohill's br m Cinderella, syrs, by Javelin—Renga, Sat 111b (Hiokton) .„ 1 Mr. W. Bobbett's b f Lady. Norah, 3yrs, 7st4lb(Kidd) ... .» ... .- 2 Mr. A. McKinnon's b f Brown Rose, 3yrs, 7st 4lb (Thornton) 3 Mr. J. Chaafe's br m Necklace (8«t 111b, Kean), Mr. W. Robertson's br m Mittrailleuie (MoMiniman), Mr. J. Chaafe's bo Howitzer (Brimner), Mr. W. T. Raymond's ch o Feverole (Skirving, carrying 41b overweight). Mr. E. Kelly a ch c Silver Prince (Morrigan) also ran. Lionel, Petroleum, Tamora, Green Mount, and Antelope were scratched. The betting, such as it was, was 6 to 4 on the field, with Necklace for favourite and Cinderella for second call. Mr. Stephens, having got his field into a good line, effected an excellent start, and Necklace, Mitrailleuse, Brown Rose, and Cinderella were next in order, but at the back of the course Cinderella, who was running very strongly, ran into third place, supplanting Brown Rose, and in this order they entered the cutting, all being in a cluster, and the lead very slight indeed, the first three being neck and neck, Brown Rose fourth, and Silver Prinoe last. Coming into the straight, Kean had the whip out on Necklace, but the mare tired in the straight, and was passed by Cinderella, Lady Norah and Brown Rose. Cinderella won, hands down, by a length from Lady Norah, a half a length dividing the latter and Brown Rose. Necklace finished|fourth, Mitrailleuse fifth, and Howitzer was last. The running of Silver Prince, the son of Anteros—Sylvia, in this race was rather disappointing, and Necklace hardly finished in the form expected. Time, lmin. 45Jsec. There was £528 on the total isator, 125 on the winner, and the dividend was £3 10s. Welcome Stakes of 200iovs, added to a sweepstakes of 3sovs each, second horse to receive 30sots, and third horse lOsovs out of the stakes. For two-year-olds. Colts, Sst slb ; fillies, 8«t. Five furlongs. Mr. John Chaafe's bf Bangle, by Musket —Locket, Bst (J. Kean) 1 Mr. John Chaafe's br colt Niagara, by Anteros—Frailty (Brimmer) 2 Mr. W. Robertson's b f Lady Alice, by —Kricyna (MoMiniman) ... 3 Mr. J. Allwell's b g Memorandum, by Feve —Memento (Pearson), Mr. D. McKinnon's b a Sir Walter, by Leolinus—bay Camden mare (Wilmot), Messrs. Kelly and Sutherland's ch a Paddy, by Anteros— Atalanta (Morrigan), Mr. J. Allwell's oh f Haricot by Feve —Clipper (Durston), Colonel Fraser's b f Pikau by Anteros —Amstria (Stone), Mr. G. Wright's b f Lady Florin by Musket Florin (T. Taylor), Mr. G. Wright's br f Balista, by Musket—Ouida (D. Morrigan), Mr. J. B. Williamson a b f Gipsy, by Musket—Madcap (Carey) also ran. Mr. W. Robertson's oh o Eruption, by Leolinus— Venus Transit, was soratched. There was a great deal of interest in this the first introduction of eleven splendidly bred youngsters to the race oourse, and as they leit the paddock for their preliminary canters they were eagerly scanned, but in a very short time the public selection was made, and Necklace's young sister Bangle was eleoted favourite at even money, Lady Florin being next in demand at 4 to 1; but there was very little betting of any kind. The start was at the 5-furlong post, just outside the entrance to the cutting, and considering that the youngsters bad never before faced the flag they were far from being fractious, and although there were one or two attempts at breaking away Mr. Stephens got them away to an excellent stare. They all emerged in a cluster from the catting, out of which the favourite, Bangle, was the first to show in front, and by the time the entrance to the straight was reaohed she had a clear lead of a length, Lady Alice being seoond, and Niagara third. Bangle bad no difficulty in maintaining the lead, and won easily by a length, and her stable companion Niagara, half-brother to the renowned Trenton, disposed of Lady Alice, Bister to Mitrailleuse, in the straight, supplanting her for second position. The others were close up, but the race from first to last appeared to be between the three leaders. Time, lmin 6aecs. There was £862 on the totalisator, 302 on the winner, and the dividend was £2 lis, whioh, considering that Bangle was such a warm favourite, was by no means unsatisfactory. Handicap Hurdle Baob, of 100 sovs,, with a sweepstakes of 3 sovs. each to go to second horse. Over eight flights of hurdles. Two miles. ~ Messrs. R. and R. Duder's b m Belle, 5 years, by Musket, list slb, (J. Rae) .. 1 Mr. W. K. Carter's b m Coral, 5 years, 9ot 71b, (Heaton) ... ... ... ... 2 Mr. J. B. Williamson's ch gGuyFawkes, aged, list 31b, (J. Lang) .- ... 3 Alaric (list 71b). Tiger (list). Alfred (9«t 121b), Pipi Oat 101b), Miss Griffiths (9<t 71b), Fairplay (Oat 71b), Zip (Oat 51b), and Rawenata (Out), also ran. Maccaroni, Silvio, and Fair Lilian, were soratched. Guy Fawkes and Belle were equal favourites, although some of the others had friends who backed their chances on the totalisator: It proved to be one of the best hurdle races we have had at Ellerslie for some time, and all the horses were on the job. All cleared the first hurdle almost in a line—at all events in such a cluster as to make it hard to observe who led, but Fair Play lost his chance by rushing up the hill at the back of the course. Comiog through the straight Guy Fawkes led, followed in close order by Tiger and i Rawenata, with the rest handy. There were numerous changes of position between the stand and the back of the course, but at this ?oint Guy Fawkes was still in the lead, with ipi second, Tiger third, Rawenata fourth, and Belle fifth. Much the same order was maintained to the home turn, where Coral came up with a rush and looked dangerous, but Rae, biding his time, called on Belle at the proper time, and she came through the field like a flash, winning with comparative ease by two lengths, Coral beating Guy Fawkes for second place, and the rest finished in a scattered tail. The race was run in the fast time of 4min ljseo. There was £860 on the totalisator, 272 on the winner, and the dividend was £2 16j. Prince of Wales Handicap of 150sovs, added to a sweepstakes of 3sovs each ; second horse to receive 20«ovs, and third horse sbovs out of the stakes. For 'ihree-year-olds and upwards. One mile and a half. Mr. J. Chaafe's blk h Turquoise, agad, by Tubal Cain— Bst 121b (Kean) 1 Mr. W. T. Raymond's b m Clogs, 7st . 131b (Skirving) ... ... 2 Mr. W. Robertson's br m Mitrailleuse, 7st lib (Pearson) 3 Mr. G. Wright's bm Friendship (Bat lib, Taylor), Mr. Bobbett's br h Libeller (7st 61b, Kidd), Mr. J. Kean's ch g Victory (6st 131b, Myers), Mr. Carter's br g Rewi (7st 31b, Armer), Mr. McKinnon's bo Reokless (6st 111b. Thornton), Mr. G. Wright's b f Tamora (6st 8lb), Colonel Prater's b m Aimee (6st 6lbs, O'Meara), and Mr. J. Chaafe's gr o Cannon (fist lib, Mcllroy) also ran. There were no scratohings in this race. Although the race was considered an open one, Turquoise, who came on to the course in splendid condition was made a favourite. There was considerable fractiousness at the post, and the start was a poor one, of which Cannon had the best, for he was at once brought to the front and ant out the running, but he had soon to retire and give place to better company. Passing the stand the first time Rewi was in the lead, with Clogs second, and all the rest, but just here Cannon began to fall back, and was afterwards hopelessly out of the race. In the cutting Aimee went to the front, Clogs maintaining second plaoe, and the favourite improved his position and ran into third place, Kean evidently going up to feel his horses. At the entranoe to the straight Clogs was in the lead ; but Turquoise was then let oat, and, coming up with a rush, finished an easy winner by a length, half a length separating Clogs and Mitrailleuse, the latter having raced the distance better than was antioi' pated. There was a good race to the finish between Clogs and Mitrailleuse ; Friendship was fourth, Libeller fifth, Victory sixth, and Rewi seventh, Cannon being last. Time,

2min 42«e0. There was £1123 on the totalisator, 559 on the winner, and the dividend was £116s. Selling Steeplechase, of 80sovs. Four* year-olds to carry list; five-year-olds, list 121bs; six years and upwards, 12st 4lbs. Winner to be sold for 150sovs. If entered not to be sold to carry I4lbs extra ; if entered to be sold for lOOsovs 71bs allowed; if for 75sovs 14lbs allowed ; if for ovs 21 lbs allowed; if for 25sovs. 28lbs allowed; if for nil 42lbi allowed. About three and a half miles. Mr. J. Lennard's b g Faloon, Hat lib (J. Ri.e) 1 Mr. P. J. Buxton's bg Huntsman', 9»t 01b (Pell) ... 2 Colonel Fraser's blk g Fair Play, Oat lib (Hadfield) ... ... 3 Colonel Dawson's Miss Griffiths, lOstlSlbs, (Hope), also ran. Reform and Ruahine were scratched. Shortly after the start Fair Play went to the front, followed by Huntsman, Falcon, and Miss Griffiths in the order named, and this order was maintained down the hill, but at the sod fence Faloon took second plaoe. There was no change of positions over the water jump and stone wall and round to the baok up the hill and to the post and rails on the top. Coming up the flat to the double jump in front of the grand stand Falcon took the lead, whioh he never afterwards surrendered. Miss Griffiths was by this time out of the race, and the straggle was between the other three. They kept olose together, but once the flat was reached again Faloon took the raoe out of the region of doubt, and he won eventually by a length from Huntsman, Fair Play being a good third. Time, Smins. 50seo. There was £360 on the totalisator, 159 on the winner, and the dividend was £2. The winner was put up for sale according to the conditions, by Mr. Tonks, and was bought in by the owner at £8210s. Epsom Plats, of lOOsovs, with a sweepit*ke of 3aovß each to go to seoond horse. For two and three-year-olds. Two-year-old colts, 7st 71bs; fillies, 7st 21bs. Three-year-old colts, Oat. ; fillies, Sst 91bs. Winners of a weight-for-age race sinoe August 1 to carry 31b* penalty. Five furlongs. Mr. W. Robertson's b f Lady Alice, 2yrs, by MusketErioyna, 7at lbs (Pearson) 1 Messrs. Lyons and Blaikie's br o Catesby, 3yrs, 9st (Hodson) ... 2 Mr. D. MoKinnon's bo Scot Free, 3yrs, 9st (Wilmot) ... ... . M ... 3 Howitzer, 3yrs, Feverole. 3yrs, Greenmount, 3yrs, Antelope, 3yrs, Queenie, 2yrs, and Lady Florin, 2yrs, also ran. Lady Norah, Riooohet, Jessie, Memorandum, Eruption, Haricot, Bangle, and Balista were scratched, thus weeding the field down to nine starters out of 18 acceptors, bat leaving a sufficient number to make a highly inteersting race. Scot Free was slightly in favour for this race, but the field was a decided favourite. After one breakaway they were let off in fair order. Howitzer hanging at the post, and Lady Alice at once taking the lead was never caught. Catesby made a grand rush at the finish and nearly succeeded in making the raoe a dead heat, but the judge was able to separate them, awarding the prize to Lady Alioe. Time, lmin ssec, or a second taster than the Welcome Stakes, won by Bangle. There was £781 on the totalisator, 142 on the winner, and the dividend was £4 19*. Selling Race of 50aovs. Winner to be sold by auction immediately after the raoe, and the whole of the proceeds to go to the funds. Minimum weight, Bst. One mile. Messrs. Lyons and Blakio's b m Pipi (J. Kean) 1 Colonel Eraser's b g Kaiwaka (Stone) ... 2 Mr. J. Millison's b m Melody (Skirving) S Duder Bros'. Scout and Mr. Morton's Flageolet also ran. Yuba Bill, The Barb, King Craig, and Radames were scratched. This was a fast raoe from the start. Soout took the lead, but at the entrance to the straight Kaiwaka passed him and Pipi ran into seoond place, passing Kaiwaka in the turn in the straight and winning easily at the finish. The totalisator dividend was £2 14s. The winner was bought in by the owner for £27 10s. This brought to a conclusion a very plea* sant afternoon's sport and active preparations were speedily made by the visitors to reach the train or other conveyances whioh were to take them homeward.
