SACRIFICES OF THE SALVATION ARMY.
The members of the Salvation Army on September 4 entered upon their week of selfdenial prescribed for them by General Booth for the purpose of raising £5000 to meet some of the most pressing liabilities of the organisation, The General set an example. to his followers by giving np meat. This he states he commenced ten days ago, and he will not again taste meat until the end of the week. A "prominent officer" has secured 6d towards the fund by cutting the hair of another "still more prominent officer." Two ladies gave the contents of their plate chest. A family of nine will give up meat and everything else they think of for a week. A North Country Salvationist has promised to work an extra turn in the coal-pit, and send the money thus earned to the SelfDenial Fund. A foreigner has undertaken to give up meat, eggs, butter, and sugar for the week, and another member has promised to deny himself a winter's overcoat aDd his wife a jacket, and the £5 saved will be sent to swell, the fund. Colonel Tucker, who has just sailed for India with the coloured Salvationists who came over for the International Congress, having no money to send, has forwarded a pair of socks, a pair of sandals, and an Oriental coat, to be sold for the benefit of the fund. It is stated thousands of members and their friends have filled up the self-denial coupons," and hundreds of officers have promised to forfeit their alaries.
