Thb Governor has received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies a copy of » despatoh from Viscount Lyons to Earl Rosebery, relating to an interview with M. de Freyoinet on the subject of reoidivistes being lent to New Caledonia. Vuoount Lyons reminded M. de Freyoinet tbat the feeling in Australia against the proposed deportation was as intense as ever. M. Freyoinet would give no assurances for the future, and ■aid that Mew Caledonia and its dependencies were, so far back as November last, designated placet to which reoidiviatea might be relegated, and. events occurred which rendered it very important that recourse should be had to them for tbat purpose. A proposal had been made by M. de Freyoinet to the Imperial Government, which, had it been accepted, would have put an end to the transportation of French criminals to the Paoifio. The interview ended wish Viscount Lyons entering a fresh protest against the transportation.
