THE MELBOURNE CUP. [special message.]

Melbourne, November 3. Arsenal, the winner of the Cap, was backed by the stable to win £20,000, but as bis gallops did not please his party, a lot of money was hedged, and the remainder kept against their will. The horse had done badly at feeding, and three days before the race he had fasted for twenty hours. Arsenal had been backed for the double with Ban Bolt for the Caulfield Cap and Trident for the Derby. Arsenal goes back to Sydney immediately. Altogether the win was a good one for the bookmakers, but had Trident won the ring would have been broken. The defeat of Malua, Ben Bolt, Meteor, and Hexham greatly favoured them. Arffenal was bought as a yearling by the Hon. W. Pearson for £625, and was sold privately to Mr. W Gannon. The horse was bred by Mr. F. Reynolds, of Tocal, New South Wales. Trident waa out of the race two furlongs from home. His Derby punishment settled his chance, although he ran a great horse. Trenton and Silvermine also ran splendidly. The Hon. J. White for two years has now obtained fourth place with Derby winners, viz., Trident and Nordcnfeldt.

Disowned has been freely maintained at the head of the Cup and Derby betting, and all the money offering about this horse has been taken up. Lochiel has livened a little, and Nelson, after being knocked out early in the week, has again reached 100 to 15, and finds backers. Ruby and Tasman have been backed for a small amount, and are still in request at 100 to 9 each. Disowned is a> fair favourite for the Derby, and hie stable companions Torrent and Ruby are next in demand.
