THE POISONING OF CAPTAIN CAIN.

♦ [by telegraph. CORRESPONDENT.] Timaku, Tuesday. Ever since the news leaked out that antimony had been found in the late Captain Cain's remains by the analysis of experts in Dunedin, the people here have been greatly excited, and the news which got abroad early to-day that an inquest is to be held on what remains there are now of Cain has greatly intensified the excitement. The coroner for the district. Mr. J. Beswick, and a jury will commence the inquest on Thursday at eleven a.m., and early that morning I am informed the body will again be ex homed. After the jury have viewed it, an adjournment of the inquest will probably be requested, as the authorities have not fully completed compiling their evidence. The number of witnesses to be called is said to be very large, and the inquest is likely to cover a few days. So far as I can ascertain one of the most important links missing in the chain of evidence of what is now known all over the colony as the "Cain case," is that relating to the purchase of the poisons. It is said that a witness is now on his way from home, and also another from Australia, whose combined evidence will, however, tend to throw some light on this very important question.
