VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

Bio Gun Drill.—The "O" Battery of Artillery, with a view of promoting the knowledge of big gun drill in the corpi, have arranged big gun equada to be instructed every morning at Point Resolution Battery. A full squad mustered yesterday morning under Captain George, and was put through a severe course of drill, lasting upwards of an hour. Application was made to the Government to cover the guns in and light the enclosure with gas ; but, the request not being complied with, the battery have resolved to do so at their own expense, and thus enable the guns to be nsed at night for drill purposes.

Gordon , Rifles.— The first competition for a handsome silver medal with gold oentre, presented to the Gordon Rifles by ColorSergeant Buchanan, took place on Saturday, at the Mount Eden Range. Twenty-four members put in an appearance. At the request of the color-sergeant the officers competed, and it will be noticed that Lientenant Hay is leading by four points. The shooting on the whole is not what it might have been, owing, perhaps, to the fact that a moderate "representative" wind was blowing at the time. The next and final competition will take place in a few weeks. The following are the scores :— 200rda 300rds 500rdn Tl liisatantnt Har .. 4444544 6342453 8&86440—78 Sergt. Taylor. No. 3 Battalion.—An inspection parade of the No. 3 Battalion took place in the Drill-shad last night, when there were fair musters of the various corps, the Newton Rifles having the best turn oat. LieutenantColonel Mahon was in command, and Majors Tonka and Birnie were also present, withCapt. Houghton as adjutant. The College Rifles and Gordons were, owing to their small numbers, formed into one company. The occasion was taken advantage of for Lieutenants Boyes, Cooper, Little, and T. Keesing to undergo the practical part of their examination, and each took over command of the battalion in turn, and put the parade through the usual movements so far as the circumscribed space of the shed would permit. Lieutenant-Colonel Shepbard, and Majors Pitt and Derrom, of the Examining Board, were in attendance. Since their last appearance on parade the Newton and Ponsonby Rifles have been served out with helmets, whioh are a great improvement upon the peak cape. The Veterans are now the only corps without the spiked helmet.
