BANKRUPTCY.
Debtor's Examination. a Richard Nortuet Hopkins, who described himself as out of occupation at present, was examined by the Official Assignee in bankruptcy on Saturday. * He said that during bis 22 years in the colonies he had been a squatter, farmer, auctioneer, gold digger, whaler, and latterly had been canvassing for a life insurance company; and also had ba sa an artist. Last October he returned to the colony from a 12 months' visit to tins old country. His individual earnings since his return had been nil. When travelling for the < insurance company his expenses came to considerably more than the commissions, and he had found no sale for his pictures. He had got credit, and borrowed money in the expectation of remittances from home, whiob have unaccountably not come to hand. His debts were £149 3s 2d, of which £112 3s 2d have been contracted since, and £37 before, his visit to England, and all he had in the nature of assets was about £45 worth of household furniture and effects. There was more furniture in the house but it belonged to his mother-in-law and her son, who resided with him, and they had made an affidavit enumerating the articles they claimed. He was still hopeful .of getting the expected remittance, and when he did he would pay everybody. His object in filing was to get rid of the bailiff ' a creditor had put in possession of the furniture. He had no legal claim on his home friends as far as he knew, but expected to inherit property under his mother a will at her decease.
