Oar West Pukekohe correspondent writes: —We have now a Young Men's Mutual Improvement Class thoroughly established in our midst, and in oonneotion with it a readingroom, where all the periodical! of the day are kept. The room is open to the members twice a week, Thursday and Saturday. On the 9th instant an entertainment was held under the auspieoes of the class. The hall was comfortably filled. The Rev. T. W. Dunn, as president of the olass, took the chair, and a lengthy programme was rendered very effectively. At the close votes of thanks were carried by acclamation to the Rev. S. La wry for the use of his. organ, and to the chairman and those members who gave their services, in carrying out the entertainment. Mr. Binning pronounced the benediction, and the meeting separated. The proceeds amounted to £7 10s, which will be handed over to the Mayor of Auckland intact for the Rotorua Relief Fund, the class paying all expenses out of their own funds. The ship Halcione took her departure from Aratapa on Saturday evening, but was only able to get as far as Kopuru, when the falling tide left her fast. She, however, got away on Sunday morning. The steam tug Awhina came up to take her down. Ihe Halcione is the largest vessel that has been up the Wairoa for 15 or 20 yean,— (.Own Corresponds July 12, J e ii -
