DEATH OF MR. ROBERT GILLIES.

A telegram was received early yesterday forenoon from Dr. Coughtrey by Mr. Farqunar Macrae, solicitor, intimating the deatb of Mr. Robert Gillies, of Dunedin, and requesting him to break the intelligence to the deceased's relatives in Auckland. Mr. R. Gillies was a younger brother of Mr. Justice Gillies, and son of the late Mr. Giliios, Registrar of Otago, and was for many year» head partner of the firm of Mcusrs. Gillies, Street, and Co., of Dunedin. At the last general election he was returned as member for Bruce, and during the first session of the present Parliament took an active part in the business brought before the House. His speeches made a very favourable impression on all who heard them, and gave promise of his becoming a most useful member. But his health suddenly gave way. aud, his medical advisers forbidding his participation in any exciting engagements, he resigned his seat, and lived in comparative retirement. By the adoption of this course his disease, which was pronounced to be aneurism of the heart, was believed to have been arretted, and for a time he was able to move about without any suspicion of injury. The improvement, however, must have been fallacious, as he somewhat suddenly expired yesterday morning about ten o'clock. The deceased, who was very much respected for his abilities and excellent qualities of both mind and heart, was married to the only daughter of Mr. C. Street, now of Auckland, and with a numerous family and a large circle of friends she is now lett to mourn over his departure.
