THE COMORO ISLANDS.
Tub Comoro Islands, recently annexed by France, and to the possession of which the Germans have put in a prior claim by right of trade, are a volcanio group in the Mozambique) Channel. 350 miles from the northwest coast of Madagascar, and 2G' miles from the east coaet of Africa. Their total area ii rather more than 1000 square miles, and the population numbers about 80,000. The group consists of the islands Angaziya, or Great Comoro, Anjaunan, or Johanna, Mayotte, and Mohilla. The islands are mountainous, and fertile in tropical productions. The meadows maintain cattle, and the streams abound in fish. The Arabs manufacture coarse cloth, jewellery, and small arms. 4, The principal exports are cocoanut oil .and tortoiseshell. The Comoros are governed by sultans, one of whom resides in nearly every town. The island of Mayotte was ceded to France in 1841, A British consul has for eome years been stationed at the islands. .- ■_■;■ .\i > ; . »■'■
