ANNUAL LICENSING MEETINGS.

NEWMARKET. TrtE annual meeting of the Newmarket Licensing Committee was held yesterday at the public ball, Newmarket. Present: Messrs. W. Edgerley (chairman), George Bishop, John McColl, James Maeon, and James Taite. Mr. J. B. Stoney (clerk) was also present. Newmarket Hotel.—George Henry Ea«ton applied for a renewal of the license. Sergeant Pratt said the house had been conducted in a satisfactory manner, but he suggested that fire-escapes tthoald be provided as there were at present none on the premises. Hβ thought a ladder erected from the balcony would answer for the whole building and be quite sufficient. The chairman said that had been the opinion of the committee when theyeurveyed the place. Mr. Hesketh appeared in support of the application, and said the applicant wae quite willing to accede to the recommendation of the police, and to provide fireeeoapos. The licenno was granted subject to fire-escapes being provided. Captain Cook Hotel.—Alexander Macintyre applied for a renewal of his license. Sergeant Prate said a new building was going up to replace the old one, and he suggested that fire-escapes should be provided in the new building. The chairman said they must then only grant a temporary license. Mr. Hesketh, who appeared in support of the application, said the new building would be completed in about two months. He asked that the lieeose should be renewed to the old house, and that when the new building was completed, the license should be transferred to it. The chairman remarked that the stones at present plaoed in front of the building were dangerous. Mr. Hesketh said they would be removed. The lioeuse was granted, Royal Gkokge Hotel.—Benjamin Charles Roberts applied for a renewal of the licence of the Royal George Hotel. Sergeant Pratt said there was no objection on the part of the police, as the house had been very satisfactorily conducted. There was already a very good tire escape, and the applicant also intended to erect another »li ng the full leugth of the building, so that there would be still better means of getting out in case of tire. Mi. Jackson supported the application, which was granted. Extension of Time. —Mr. Heeketh said he had to »pply on behalf of the Newmarket and the Royal George Hotels, that they should be granted an extension of time to eleven o'clock. The committee would notice that similar applications in the town had been adjourned for consideration, in order to see that the extension would bo for the public benefit, so the committee would not be acting without precedent in considering tho question there. Traffic had very much increased in Newmarket, and the trams had to run late, so that people very often required refreshment after ten o'clock. He thought if it could not be got in a legitimate way, it would be obtained by other means, and a double temptation would thus be presented to customers and landlords. He thought eleven o'clock was a reasonable and suitable hour, and he asked for an extension to that time. In reply to the chairman, he said he understood that if the extensions were granted to the two hotels he applied for, it would also be granted to the Captain Cook Hotel. Tho application wae deferred for consideration until Friday week, the 18th instant.
