This Australian Mutual Provident Association have presented Inspector Pender with a cheque for 15 guineas, in recognition of that officer's energy and ability in bringing Howard, of " severed hand" notoriety, to justice. On the last trip of the s.s. Wakatipu for Sydney a man named Harry White wag a passenger. It is alleged that he robbed his employer, Mr. Thomas Dickinson, of Weßtport, of £300 worth of jewellery, £200 worth of which he disposed of here, and which tfie police succeeded in recovering. White was arrested in Sydney on the strength of a cablegram, and Constable McKinnon, of Westport, left by the s.s. Hauroto to-day to bring him back. Fielding, Monday. A slight shook of earthquake was felt here last night at half-pant seven, and a severe one this morning at fifteen minutes past one. Dunedin, Monday. William Dora, miner, at Skipper, died suddenly in his bunk, and William Boyd died suddenly while riding between Moncktoa and Qusenatown.
