BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday afternoon in their office, Victoria Arcade. Present: Messrs. Luke (chairman), Carr, D. oldie, Lennox, and Upton. Funds. The secretary reported that the balances on the 4th June were Education fund credit, £4G70 8s 8d; building fund credit, £23 19a 9d ; passbook, £4694 8s 5d ; £5450* at fixed deposit; Girls' High School at credit, £251 14s 4d. ' Chairman's Report.— chairman reported as follows Maungatapere : Committee informed as to payment of school fund allowance. Mercury Bay : Committee again asked for report on application for school at Upper Mill. Tauhoa : Committee instructed as to painting of school and teacher s dwelling with two coats of paint. Teachers : — The following temporary arrangements have been made : -Mr. C. Maclean, probationer, to Waipu North, pending appointment of teacher. Students from Training College to Newton West and Richmond Road Schools. Resignation received : Mr. A. French, Mount Albert School,at :>oth June; Mrs. S. M. Evans. Accept alternative of salary, with leave to Juno 30th instant. : Mrs. Boult. Referred to department for classification; Miss K. Kee3ing, Miss C. Murrish. Applications for increase of salary are held over until quarterly adjustment. Mr. J. R. Black : Explanation sent as to arrears of salary. Mr. Thoa. Rochford : Information sent to Education Department, Hobart, a3 to classification and service. Leave of absence granted as follows Mr. W. E. Browne, till cud of June ; Miss I'ascoe, Maugere, a week, death in family. Requisitions : Requisitions for school furniture and appliances have been dealt with.

Maukct School.—A letter was laid on the table from H. Crispe, Chairman of the Mauku School Committee, forwarding the annual report of tha committee passed at a meeting of householder!! on April 27, ISS6, and May 31, 18S3. The report stated that satisfactory progress had been made by tha children, 54 out of 64 children having passed examination. From the Patumahoe School 60 went up and 51 passed. At the West Mauku School 4 were examined and 3 passed. The success was in a great measuro due to Mr. Hogwood, teacher of the Patumahoe School. At tho West Mauku School the attendance had fallen to 7, and the Board of Education closed ft. Tho committee had deferred the consideration of another site for the school. The school had, in the meantime, been opened by Mr. Elmsley at half time.

RtTArnicE School Biuldin'g.—The lowest tender for repairs, Mr. P. M. La Trobo, £40, was accepted.

Newmarket. —Plans and specifications for addition to school buildings were presented. Resolved that tenders in accordance be invited.

Re Patntino School Buildings.—The department objected to the charge for painting against loan for erection of buildings. It was agreed that painting must be paid for from other sources. Re Mauku Election. —Letters were received from Mr. Crispe and Mr. Norton, chairman of tho meeting, concerning the alleged irregularities at the meeting for conducting this election. Mr. Criape requested full investigation. The Board inquired into the question of the legality of certain votes, several members from the district being in attendance to give information. It was resolved that a reply should bo sent to Mr. Norton and Mr. Crispo requesting fuller information for the consideration of the Board at next meeting.

Appointment of Commissioners. — Messrs. Lovell, Timmins, Hogan, and Hall, were appointed commissioners for Taupiri. Howies.—A letter was read from householders at Howick, complaining of irregularities at the recent election, and protesting against its being considered legal, and asking for a commission to inquire. A letter was also read from T. H. tiickson, describing at great length the irregularities of the chairman and others at the meeting for election. It was said the chairman "positively announced that he would not allow anybody to speak at the meeting, even to propose any candidates not on the printed list. After some discussion, Mr. Carr moved that the consideration of the matter be deferred for a week, when the source of dispute, which was as to tho removal of the master, would have been settled by his having been removed. They might then have an election free from the feeling which had been present at the last. Mr. Upton moved, as an amendment, that tho Board saw no reason to question tho validity of the election. The amendment was adopted.

One-tree Hill Reserve.—A letter was read from the Town Clerk of Onehunga, by direction of the One-tree Hill Domain Board, drawing attention to the Bill for dealing with the One-tree Hill education reserve, proposed to brought before the session of the General Assembly. The reserve had been for many years open to the publio, and had been closed by the Government during the Waikato war. It w. . made an education reserve in order to prevent it falling into the hands of private parties. The Onetree Hill Domain Board thought the reserve should be converted into a public domain for the benefit of the rapidlyincreasing population. The desire of tho Board v.-aa that part of the reserve should bo converted into a park and gardens, aud another portion let on lease to produce & revenue for the purpose of laying out and planting them. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Goldie, it was resolved "That this Board enter its protest against tho alienation of the One-tree Hill education endowment, as proposed by the One-tiee Hill Reserves Bill now before the House of Representatives ; ami that tho Reserve Commissioner and the Auckland members be invited to co-operate with the Board in opposing this and similar measures which will have the effect of diminishing the value of tho limited endowments set apart for primary and secondary education in the Auckland district." Applications. — Kauaeranga : Certain members of the Kauaerunga School Committee applied for the deferring of action on a resolution forwarded to the Board, re changing schools until further time had been given to the committee to reconsider it; other letters were read, and the que»tion was deferred for a fortnight, the above lettor to bo referred to the committee. Kaiwaka : Grant allowed of £10 for stable for teacher's horse. Ngaruawahia : Application was made for fencing in of new school; granted. Kangiaohia.—A letter was read stating that tho sum of £35 143 for tho furniture and sustcnanco of their school library, and trusting they would get substantial aid from the Board. Grant of £10 voted. T'k Rahu.—A request was made for permission to exchange portion of the present school site for a piecc of level ground adjoining. Granted. Waiorongomai.—Application was made for assistance for a small building connected with the school. £5 granted. Hokianca.—Certain pieces of land not required for school purposes were allowed to be let for a time. Howies.—Mr. C. R. Davis was appointed tcacher. The accounts were passed, and the Board adjourned.
