CARLYLE ON IRELAND.
A coKBEi-FOSDENT, writing u> the Times, saye :—" It has not been pointed out, 1 believe, that the project of adding 100 or 200 millions to the National Debt for the pnrpose of getting rid of Ireland is not new. It was suggested in the Examiner, April 29, ISIS, by no leae a man than Thomae Carlyld. There is, however, a trifliDg difference in the proposed mode of procedure. Mr. Carlyle's words are these :—" I venture to Bay, in eptte ot the present extenuated state of finance and pressure of the income tar, and unspeakable pressures and extenuations of every kind —oould any projecting Warner of the long range be found who would undertake to unanchor the island of Ireland and sail fairly away with it and with all its population and possessions, to the last torn hat that stope a window pane, aud anchor them safe again at a distance, say of 3000 miles from us—funds to any amount would be subscribed here for putting ioto immediate activity such Warner of the long range. Funds! Our railways have coat us 150 millions, but what were all railways for convenience of England in comparison to this unanchoring of Ireland from the side of her ? If it depended on funde, such Warner of the long range might have funds in sufficiency. To make the National Debt an even milliard of pounds sterling, which gives 200 and odd millions to the Warner operation, thi», heavy as it is, I should think oncofthebest of investments of capital ; and do not doubt it would be cheerfully raised in thig country forsuch an object." (See "Life of Carlyle," by Shepherd and Williamson, vol. ii., p. 375.)"
