The County Council has obtained a grant from the Government for the Puriri-Hiku-taia Road, which will be commenced at once ; also £400 for the Ilape Creek Road. At a numerously-attended meeting of fruit-growers, the following reaolutiom were passed :—"That it is desirable the Codlin Moth Act should at once be brought into I operation within the borough and county of ! Thames ; also that the petitions to the Thames County and Borough Council; which were prepared pursuant to' the Aot, be approved and adopted ; that a Fruitgrowers' Association bo formed at the Thames; that all persons interested in fruit culture be invited to join ; and that a provisional committee, consisting of the Mayor, Meesrs. Marshall, W. H. Smith, R. A. Wright, R. N. Smith, Allom, Robert Hudson, Steedman, and Dean, be eleoted, for the purpose of forming the association, with power to frame rules and a programme of operations, to be submitted to the members at a future meeting." At the inquest on the burning of the stable* at Waingahika, in which the raoehorse Leonata was burned, the jury found a verdict of " Incendiarism by some persona unknown. ,. The horse was insured for £250. Wellington, Wednesday; Mr. W. Read, ex-governor of Wellington Gaol, was thrown from his buggy this morning owing to the horse bolting. Hβ now lies in an unconscious state, but his injuries are believed not to be serious. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce it was decided to represent to the Government the desirableness of passing a law whereby persons accused of offences against the city by-laws and trivial breaches of the police regulations may, if they do not dispute the charge, pay the fine prescribed for such offence without the necessity of attending the hearing at the Magistrate's Court. The local Artillery parade to • morrow morning to fire a salute in honour of the Czar's coronation, Hoeitika, Wednesday. The Bank of New Zealand shipped for London per Ruapehu 4080 ounces of gold bullion, valued at £16,300. At a meeting of the Gas Company a dividend of eight shillings per share was declared. Dunkdin, Wednesday. At a meeting of policyholders of the Australian Mutual Provident Society it was resolved to protest against the opening of t> branch of the society in London. The Forbury Park Land Company have declared a dividend of £3 per cent., and distributes one-tenth of the capital pro rate amongst the shareholders. Inveeoargill, Wednesday. A collision with cattle took place on the Bluff line last evening. Three trucks in the centre of a long train were thrown off the line. The passengers were brought on to Inveroargiil, also the fore part of the trail), which fortunately kept the line. All escaped with a severe shaking. The line was cleared during night, and traffic hat been resumed.
