The (Jovent Garden Gazette and Market Record for April 10 has come to hand. This is a comparatively new publication, having only entered upon its second volume. It contains several well written articles upon the state of the fruit and vegetable markets in London and some of the chief towns in Britain, together with each day's market quotations for fruit, etc., at Coyent Garden. Tomatoes are quoted as having first; appeared that week, both from Mr. Gough, of Uxbridge, and from the Channel Islands, and are quoted at 2a to 3s per lb. Could not thie fruit be sent from Auckland in a oold chamber, so as to anticipate the earliest arrival of supplies from the Channel Islands ? We think the plan is feasible, and might well be tried. Grapes also are quoted up to 8a per lb. There is surely sufficient margin here to attempt the exportation of these in a cold chamber. They could be sent away from here at a time they are plentiful, and reach the London market at a, time when there would be none others to compete with with them save those grown in Australia. Strawberries are quoted at from 8a to 10s per lb., while a week or two previously they were quoted at 24s per lb. Although this fruit might be difficult to carry, the price is tempting, and it would be well if our horticulturists put the matter to the test, and prove whether the exportation of any of these fruits, in a oold chamber from Auckland to London, would be practicable and profitable.
