WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.
[from otjb own correspondents.] Hamilton, Saturday. The Rey. Mr. Smallfield, Diooeean Sunday, school Inspector, waa to have arrived at Hamilton to-day, but hie visit haa been postponed for a fortnight, when he will viait the various Church of EDgland Sunday, schools in Waikato. ,T-T, he i a &r Jain T ee Hi,1 ' gon of Mr. Thomaa Hill, of West Hamilton, whoae accident by being thrown from his horse on Wednesday you have already published, is slowly regaining consciousness from the effect of concussion of the brain, under the skilful care of Dr. Murch. The symptoms of paralysis have, however, not yet disappeared Mr. J. Vereker Bitidon, the head teacher of the Hamilton district High School, has received the offer of aa appointment' to a high school in the Middle Island. Application has been made to the Govern, ment by the Waikato County Council, for tbat portion of the Peach Grove reserve lying outside the borough boundary, some 130 acres, as a reserve for the establishment of a school of agriculture at Hamilton. Cambridge, Saturday. The Lichfield railway haa already worked a revolution in the coat of supplies to the country of Waikato, and especially to the Lake Country. Where formerly the price # of flour at Taupo was £2 per cwt it can now'be purchased for cash for £1. Gooda were formerly brought from Tauranga or Waikato to Ohinemutu, and thence to Taupo at the cost of £20 per ton for freight, and from Napier to Taupo at the same price; Now that the lice is open to Oxford the same goods are got up for £9 per ton. There is a considerable amount of trade doing ia Taupo. Several storekeepers from Waikato and Napier have commenced business there, and still remain waiting till the Land Court opens. There were 137 signatures to the petition which has now been tent to Wellington, praying that the town of Cambridge be formed into a borough. The meeting of the members of the Cambridge Jockey Club, called for Thursday evening last, was so thinly attended that it had to be postponed until uext Thursday. R.glan, Saturday. It is scarcely to be wondered at that thie district should protest strongly against the working of the new Hospital and Charitable Aid Act. At the last meeting of the conference at Hamilton, Mr. J. K. McDonald, our representative there, stated for a fact that for the last 20 years only one person in the entire district had been necessitated to accept outside charitable aid. This is proverbially a struggling district, but the above shows that if farming has not made our settlers rich, it has at least kept them above the other extreme. The lime-burning mdaatry is being still carried on, and a regular supply got ready for the Auckland market. There should spring up a go&d demand for the Raglan lime tor agricultural and horticultural purposes wherever there is cheap transit from Auckland. Where lime has been used in this district, notably about the Waipa river, where lime was burned by Mr. R. Loane, its application to the soil has been followed by tbe most satisfactory results. On Mr. Noble's farm the portion of a grass paddock sown, some three years since, with lime stands out prominent from the remainder, and the cattle are fonder of the grass on that part that any other. Aβ a preventive to the apple blight and the decay in peach trees it haa been found very efficient. The following school committee has been elected for the Waitetuna district—namely : Messrs. Wallis, Robertson, Cogswell, King, J. R. McDonald, Moon, and W. Gibbison, Mr. Wallis wa3 re elected chairman.
