Perhaps one of the most interesting matches during the meeting was that for the purpose of testing ammunition manufactured at the establishment of Messrs. Whitney and Co., Mount Eden. It will be remetnbenl that at the recent New Zealand Association meeting, held at Wanganui, there was a trial of the ammunition, when it was not so satisfactory as could be desired ; however, since then Captain Whitney has made considerable improvements in his manufactory, aud for the purpose of having another trial with cecognised shots, that gentleman sent out '200 rounds for practice. The Auckland Association, for the purpose of having a satisfactory test of the ammunition, picked out twenty of the highest aggregate scorers on the ground ; and considering that with all new ammunition there is a strangeness to competitors before they tind out what is its characteristic, the tost was highly satis factory. In fact, at the "200 yards, the shooting was all that could be desired, and had it not been for both a baffling light and wind at the 500 yards, and the fact that the ammunition carried a little lower than the Government brand, the scores would have reached a much higher figure. One complaint, however, was made by the competitors, and that was that the powder touled the barrel rather more than the Government brand. Captain Whitney, who was on the ground, admitted the justness of the complaint, but said they were now making ench alterations in the lubricating of the bullets as would completely do away with the fouling. Altogether the test may be deemed a satisfactory one. The following are the ton highest scores :— <**£» Captain Whitney's Match. Taylor, Cordons (2) .. 17 10 27 Seaman J. Ti»ye«, U.K. (1) .. .. 10 11—27 Captain Leßoy, Lieutenant Schmitt, and Ssrgeant Birley were present, and acted as scorers. Captain Leßoy has manifested great interest all through the meeting, and has been on the ground throaghout the three days' competition.
The committee of the Auckland Rifle Association desire us to publicly thank the Hon. Thomas Henderson for the use of the range. There is room (or fully 100 targets on the ground, and a range could be got up to 1000 yards, if necessary. In fact, it would not be saying too much to put it down as the best range in the colony. Now that the competition is over, it would not bo too much to say that the meeting just ended has been the best attended aud best condncted meeting yet held by the Auckland Rifle Association. All the Thames, Wairoa, Whacgarel, and Waiuku men expressed themselves highly pleased with the way things were carried out. Much of the success may be attributed to the exertions of Captain White, Lieutenant Jennings (hon. sec.) and Volunteer Mears. Winners of prizes iu the Citizens' Match are requested to call at Mr. Mears' shop, Qaeen-9treet, and choose the trophies, according to the order of scores, before haltput live this evening. Country competitors are requested to bo at the Drill-shed this evening at seven o'clock, for the purpose ol receiving money trophios, and other prizes.
