VOLUSTEER INTELLIGENCE.
Miocm.NU Mabches. —The Devonport Garbine Club held their second competition laat Saturday at Brick Bay, with the following results :—First match, handicap, '200 yards and 300 yards, seven shots at each range. The following were the prizo-Ukers : John Duder (scratch), 53, first prize; Billing (4 points), 53, tecoiul ; Robert Wynyard (scratch), 51, third ; James Trayee (scratch), 51, fourth ; Frederick B<rtley (4 points), 50. tifth. Second match, 500 yards : W. S. Trayrs, L' 4, Hrst prize; J. Trayea, 21, second ; J. J. Ger:ard, 19, third. Ponsonby Rifles.— There was a good muster of the above corps at drill on Tuesday night, when the men were put through the manual and bayonet exercise by the officers. The captain announced that Mr. T. Peacook, M. H.K., had given a trophy to bo fired for. It wns decided at a mooting after drill to get helmets
Mkktino of OmoKBB. —A meeting of officers was hold at the Drill-abed yesterday. Colonel Lyon presided, and there were also pres»nt: Captain Commandant LeKoy, Majors Digaan and ilamlin, Captains Payne and George, and Lieutenants Skinner and Geddes. Subsequently Major Mahon and Captain White also attended. Tl>o business of the meeting was to consider the Garrison Band qnentiou, and the statements which bad been made regarding the band by Major Million. Sergeant Mcttam, the secretary of the band, was present. He had written to Colonel Lyon on behalf of the band, asking to bo allowed to make an explanation, as the statements made regarding the band had an injurious fleet; but Colonel Lyou did not think it necessary. Sergeant Mettam handed in a statement of the duties and parades the band attended, aud on the motion of Captain Payne, seconded by Captain Commandant l.eßoy, a vote of thanks was accorded to the Garrison Band for their efficient services during the past year. It was at this stage that Captain White and Major Mahon arrived. Bandmaster Hunter, of the old Artillery Band, attended, aud offered the services of his baud as 11 aecond Garrison Brass Band on the name terms as the present band. The question of ways and means was discussed, especially as to tho funds to pay the bandmasters. Major Mahon stated that the No. 3 Battalion would not contribute to the maintenance of the Garrison Band, and a general discussion followed Captain Payne stated that if they were allowed the two companies of Artillery, tho "A" and "(J" batteries, would take over the Artillery Band. After hearing Bandmaster Hunter, who then retired, it was agreed, on the motion of Major Dignan, "That-the whole question ot providing funds for the maintenance of garrison bauds be referred to a committee, consisting of officers commanding companies to report to an adjourned meeting, to be held in a fortnight at the Drill shed." Hoii.soN Company.—A special parade of the Hobson Company is to be held to-night in order to make arrangements for attending the funeral of their late commanding officer, Lieutenant YV. G. Connolly. Proposed Shootino Match.—We loam that arrangements are being made for a shooting match between the Gordon Rifles and the Waiuku Cavalry. The teams are to bo 15 or 20 men a side, and the arrangement is that at each range arms are to be exchanged ; that is to say, each competitor will tire three shots with the short carbine, and three with the Snider nfls. The match is likely to be a very interesting one, and it is proposed that it should be fired at Waiuku.
