Captain Cleverly, when he last arrived at Fiji with the schooner Glancairn, got into trouble with the authorities, and was fined £20. It appears that when the schooner arrived there on the Sth December last, he hailsd the harbourmaster, and asked where he should bring up, and was told anywhere he liked. He anchored close to a small unoccupied craft that was moored to one of the buoys, and within a short time afterwards was admitted to pratique by the Health Officer on the 24th December, the day Captain Cleverly was coming away to Auckland by the steamer Arawata he was served with a summons to appear to answer a charge of a breach of the harbour regulations by anchoring the schooner Glencairn within 100 yards of another vessel before being admitted to pratique. Since then Messrs, Cave and Co., as agents for Captain Cleverly, applied to the Government asking for a remission of the fine, or part, on the giound that owing to the delay in getting out the summons, and not being afforded time to obtain legal assistance, he was mulcted in a fine much heavier than the offence justified. It certainly does appear as if Captain Cleverly has been most unfairly dealt with in this matter, for it is a strange thing that the authorities took no steps to summons th» captain during the 16 days he remained in the port, but only did bo on the day they found he was leaving the port. Such treatment does not speak well for the justice obtainable at these Island ports. This is not the first instance that has been brought under our notice of unfairness dealt out to masters of vessels trading to Fijian ports, and we hope the Government will see their way clear to in a measure recompense Captain Cleverly for his loss, which was, in the first instance, occasioned by the wrongful instructions of their officer, the harbourmaster. Captain Cleverly further pleads that he was not supplied with a copy of the harbour regulations, as be should have been, on his arrival. The s.s. Clansman arrived from Russell and Northern ports yesterday morning early, and last evening she left again, proceeding to Whangarei. She returns from there this evening. The s.s. Macgregor arrived in harbour from Whangarei early yesterday morning, and during the day was taken into dock for cleaning, &c At 2 o'clock to-day she is to leave for Whangarei. The cutter Leo, from Whangarei, brings a cargo of 55 tons of coal. The cutter Whangarei, from the same port, brings 54 tons of coal. The s.s. Glenelg, which should arrive from Whangarei early this morning, brings a cargo of coal for transhipment into the R.M.s.s. Mariposa. The Glenelg has been chartered to proceed next week to Nelson, to bring from there a gentleman and his family, who intend settling at Whangarei. The s.s. Argyle on her arrival from the Great Barrier yesterday morning was taken into dock for cleaning. She came out again during the afternoon, and last night left for Mercury Bay. The brig Wild Wave was towed down to the Bay named by the Argyle. The brig Wild Wave cleared at the Customs yesterday for Mercury Bay. She is there to load timber for Newcastle. The brig was towed down to her loading ground by the s.s. Argyle last night. The schooner Waiwera arrived from Whangarei at an early hoar yesterday morning with a cargo of 75 tons of coal. The s.s. Southern Cross and Manapourl, both hence, arrived at Gisborne yesterday, tbe termer at 7 a.m. and the Manapouri at 2.30 p.m. The latter left again the same afternoon for Napier. The s.B. Maitai left Gisborne for this port at 6 p.m. last evening. The three-masted schooner Coquette is to go hence to Whangaroa, and there load timber for Bydney. The brigantine Peerless, shortly expected from Newcastle with coal, has been chartered to proceed from here to Whangaroa, there to load timber for Melbourne. Captain G. S. Noma has received a report from his son in London of a sad accident that happened to Master William Gilmour, of this port, the nephew of Captain Rattray, of North Shore. He fell from the foretopsall yard of the hip Loch Linnhe, breaking one leg Jin two places, and fracturing his skull. The lad is in one of the London hospitals, and grave doubts are held of his ultimate recovery. Gilmour, it may be mentioned, with Captain Norris' son, shipped at this port with the Loch Linnhe, which went hence to Calcutta and London. There were no signs of the R.M.b.b. Mariposa, up to an early hour this morning, from San Francisco and Honolulu. Tho Mariposa was due yesterday according to time-table date, but the vessel did not leave San Francisco until one day behind time. She is consequently due ere to-night, but may possibly put in an ppearance before then. BY TELEGRAPH. PORT CHALMERS. April 2.—Sailed : S.s.
