AUCKLAND MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY.
The first annual meeting of this society was ■eld at the Auckland Institute on April 1. The minutes were read and confirmed. The secretary read the following annual report : —
The society has been formed during the past year for tho encouragement of microscopic pursuit*, and for promoting friendly intercourse amongst tho votaries of the science, which end* are promoted by meeting and tho circulation of micro objects »mo.>s,.it the members, who are at present seventeen in number. The meeting* have been i.eld during the past winter oti the lirtt Thursday in the month, at. tho Auckland Institute, the Council having very liberally allowed the society the use of a rom for time purpose. These meetings are ujinllv opened by a member leading a paper on a mitabiu subject with micro demonstration, after which various object* of in rent are shown by member", and practical Information is exchanged. Papers have been road on the following subjects :—" Animal < ells," by feasor Thomas; *■ Life History of Mosses."' by Mr. Oheeseman ; "Starches," by Mr. J. A. fond; " The Hair of Animala," by Dr. M . Moore; " Mlcrophotography " by Mr J. Martin; " The Development of Kcul' nrlerms," by Pfo'essor Thomas. Tho society is to he cougntulat don the care and skill with which tho objects are bandied, none up to the present time having been broken or lost. It was resolved that any member failing to comply with the rules circulated in the note books, shall be admonished by tho secretary, and if the neglect be repeated shall be excluded from the list. It was resolved, if the co-operation of the mioroscopists, besides those belonging to the society, be secured, to hold an exhibition of microscopic objects at an early date, to which the friends Of members and those interested shall be invited. Messrs, Martin, Bartley, and Cheeseman, were appointed a committee for the purpose.
