AN INFANT KILLED.
VERDICT OF MANSLAUGHTER. [by telegraph.—press association.] Christchurch, Monday. An inquest was held this afternoon at Halswell on the body of an infant son of Mr. Patrick Derapsey, and resulted in a verdict of manslaughter against Heinrioh Melhopt under the following circumstanoeß, disclosed by the evidence It appears that Mrs. Dempsey was driving to Christdiiuroh from Halswell on Saturday afternoon, and had the child with her in a spring trap. She was driving on the proper side of the road, close to the fence, when she met Melhopt, who was driving in company with another man, also in a spring cart. Melhopt drove his horse from the crown of the road slantwise to his wrong, side, and came into collision with Mrs. Dompsey's cart. Mrs. Pompsey and the baby were thrown out, the child striking his head on the road, producing conouasion of the brain, from which cause death nad resulted. Melhopt was committed by Mr. Bsetham, the Coroner, to take his trial at the Supreme Court on a charge of manslaughter.
