PARNELL BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last evening. Present : The Mayor (Mr. Winks), and Messrs. Lyell, Gay, McKeDzie, Clarke, Ireland, Kldd, Whitley. The minutes of last meeting and headings of outgoing correspondence were read. Correspondence. — Dr. Mackellar reported a case of typhoid fever in Mahukau Road.—-Mrs. Ruck complained of being rated for considerably more water than she used, as her house was , classed as a boarding house. She asked to be allowed to pay for the quantity used only. It was agreed to remove the: meter and charge the ordinary rate.—Mr. J. Sperry, Property Tax Commissioner, telegraphed on the 10th February, " Toucher for £281 ss, advance on account of subsidy, sent to Treasury this day." The voucher had not been received.— Mr R. H. Leary, of Danedin, wrote bringing under the notice of the Council, the New Zealand Insurance and Finance Jourrial, issued monthly, and requesting an order for copies. The letter was received.— Messrs. Fordyce, Ledger, and Shortland, requested to have the footpath in front of their premises in Manukau Road asphalted, and undertook to pay half cost; also to lower their verandahs, and erect fences on the proper line of road. The consideration of the letter was postponed.—Mr. J. Fowler asked the Council to pay bis account of £2 15» 9d out of deposit money in the hands of the Council, of Manning and Henwood, scoria carters. The Town Clerk reported that there was £8 or £9 in hand. The contractors, it appeared, were bankrupt, and it was agreed to inform the applicant that the Council had no power to grant the request. —In regard to a claim for compensation, (or a part of Avenue Road taken by the Government in connection with the fortification work, Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond sent a written opinion, concluding as follows : " The lands were invested in the Borough for certain public purposes, and by the proclamation referred to they have been diverted to certain other, public purposes. Under thesri circumstances it is very difficult to say what damage or compensation could be allowed to the Council, and we are strongly| inclined to think that it would not be worth the While of the Council to press any claim for compensation." . The letter was received: .... _ ■ J AccoONTU. —Current accounts amounting to £83.were passed for payment.' Foreman of Works.—This officer reported on various works in progress, and informed the Council that a complaint had been made of people driving horses to and from the grass to the great danger of women and children passing up and down tne path In Brighton Road. One child had been badly hurt by a kick from one of those loose horses. Ho also reported that part of the path in St. George's Bay Road would require to be rough iterbed and channelled ; also that a quantity of loose earth had fallen in Cleveland Road,
and would require to be removed. It was agreed to extend the .concrete channel 1 ing at the top of Parnell about three chains farther. In reference to the horse nuisance complained of the Foreman was instructed to have them impounded, and to call the attention of the police officer in charge of the district to the complaints. The removal of the earth from Cleveland Road Was authorised. Tenders. —Tenders for the f . following works were opened as follows:—Cutting down Manukau Road: Sullivan and Sheridan, £55. 6d (accepted); John Cheyne, £77 2s; McDonald and Co., £73. Dust: O'Donohue and McShepeny, 23s per week ; Casey and Lovett, 17s 6d (accepted); William Hodgson, •25s 6d ; E. S." Addison, 22a ; Geelson and Bray, 20s, . Metal and scoria ash, &c. : The tender of O'Donohue and McShepenv was accepted.
