WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[By telegraph.—own correspondent. ] Wellington, Friday. THE CABLE SUBSIDY. The Post this evening advocates the laying of another cable, notwithstanding the advances made by Mr. Pender. It opposes any enlargement of the period of the contract, and doubts whether tho Government is justified in keeping open its original offer to the Eastern Extension Company. It conclude a leader upon the subjeot as follows :— " The advantage of having a second cable would be enormous. In any case, the Postmaster-General of New Zealand has no power to accept the modified offer of Mr. Pender, or to go a single day beyond the term of five years sanctioned by Parliament. It was only under considerable pressure, and with great unwillingness, that the House authorised the renewal of the subsidy even for the five years, and we are quite certain that it would not be prepared to sanction the Blightost extension of that period, especially as it is now quite certain that if the Government remain firm Mr. Pender will, without doubt, accept the original terms."
