WELLINGTON, Toeeday. At the Magistrate's Court this afternoan, Frank McDowell was charged with embezeling £94 Os lid, the moneys of Jamee McDowell. The caae was farther adjourned until Tuesday next.
At a meeting of the Star Basting Club to-night, a resolution to the' effect that it i« desirable to define " amateur" as one who has not rowed for money himself, nor made any pecuniary profit from prize money, was carried, and it was also deoided to uk olnbu in other parts of the colony to adopt this resolution.
At the R.M. Court, the owners of th« small steamers Gordon and Mohaka were oharged with carrying more passengers th*c licensed while plying to ILM.s. Nelson on Sundays. The owner of the Gordon, on two charges, was fined 50s and £5 respectively, and 2s a head every additional passenger, the total being £15. The owner of the Mohaka was fined £5 o<l eaoh charge, and 2s per head overcarried.
' The Customs returns for the colony for last month are almost complete. The total ie £118,817, as compared with £113,380 for the preceding month, while for the cor-, responding month last; year the total wm £129,362.
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. A wreitltng match, Cumberland style, for £50 a side, came off to-night ia the Oddfellows' Hall between Harry Dunn and George Robinson, and resulted in favour of the former, who gained three falls oat of five. Both men showed good form, but Dunn wm too quiok for his opponent. He aononnoM himself to wrestle any man in New Zealand for £50 or £100.
The Hon. J. Ballanoe, the Hon. B. Richardson, Colonel VVhitmore, and Captain Crutchley spent to-day at Lyttelton inspecting the fortification* there.
The Hob. E. Richardson receives a deputation from the Industrial Association and the Chamber of Commerce to-morrow.
A man named William Madden was killed on Sunday night at Kai koura by the kick of a horse.
DUNEDIN, Tne«d*y. Mr. Larnaoh has returned from his toor of Waikaia district. He was impressed with the large extent of ground capable of supporting miners. Hβ found those on the ground very prosperous.
The Mayor proposes giving a reception to the firemen returning from the demonatro* tion.
Only three entries have been received for the Sires , Produce Stakes, instituted by the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society for draught stock.
The Manepouri has brought from Melbourne and Hobart a number of merino pedigree sheep for shipment per Doric to the Argentine States. A number of Border Leicestera will be taken from Port Chalmers for the same destination.
A young man named Robertson, 19 years of age, was drowned in Lake Waikatipu to-day.
