COMMERCIAL

Nivr Zealand Herald Office, Tuesday evening. The Coatoou receipt! to-day amounted £1847 3s 3d. Meiiri. Morton and Jackson offered for sale several properties to-day, at their rooms, but, though the attendance was fair, the bidding was extremely quiet. The only lot sold was 240 acres land at Tauhoa. The lot brought £35, Mr. Davis being the purchaser. It often puzzles Now Zealand farmers how South Australian wheat-growers contrive to make a living. Tho returns in the most favourable seasons are exceedingly small, and it is only by the use of every labour-saving device that any margin of profit is left. This year matters are worse than ever, and the oase of the farmers is likely to be a particularly hard one. A correspondent from Fort Adelaide writes to a Wellington farmer :—" It becomes daily mare and more apparent that our harvest now being gathered is the most miserable failure ever experienced. The stripper has frequently to journey half 8. mile before it colloctn one single sack of wheat, and we shall be surprised if the total yield will give much more than food and seed for our own population. Quotations are merely nominal, and although buyers are anxious to aoquire stocks, the growers do not oare to part with tbe small quantity of wheat they have been able to save."
