[press association,] LLINGTON, Monday. The case of Ward v. the National Bank of Timaru was before the Appeal Court again to-day, when application was made for leave to appeal to the Privy Council. After argument judgment was reserved. A rifle match was fired to-day between a team from H.M.s. Nelson and one chosen from the local volunteer companies. The blue-jackets proved victorious by 95 points. Admiral Tryon gives a return ball on board the Nelson to-morrow afternoon. At the inquest on the recent fire on Lamb ton Quay, the jury returned a verdict! to the effect that the fire originated in Myers' premises, but there was no evidence to show how or in what manner it originated. The following rider was added by the jury : —" The jurors are of opinion that great improvement might be made in the delivery of water from the standpipes, if an alteration be made to that if one hose burst the other hose attached to the same standpipe need not be shut off in consequence. • HOKITIKA, Monday. A cottage owned by a person named Ramsay, a saddler, was destroyed by fire this morning, The inmates saved very little but their clothes. The children had not time to dress. The building was insured for £100 in tbe Victoria; the furniture was not insured. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. William Grey, forty-five years of age, for some time cook at Sir John Hall's station, Hororata, was found dead this morning on a road crossing the Hororata River bed. There were no marks of violence on his body. Deceased was a steady man. Charles Lockwood, who has been for twelve months employed in prospecting in the vicinity of Browning's Pass, committed suicide there on Saturday. He had . been low-spirited for some days. The residence of Mr. Robert Allen, of Messrs. Lightband, Allen, And Co., aft Opawa, had a narrow escape of being destroyed by lire, caused by some person unknown lighting the tussocks on Aynsley's Hill. The orchard and plantation round the house were much damaged. The lose is over £100.
